Sunriver, OR (My Sportsbook) - Duke University won the 2005 NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship on Friday at the Meadows Golf Club at the Sunriver Resort.
Duke, led by the individual champion Anna Grzebien, shot a combined 34-over- par 1,170. Defending champion UCLA finished second with a combined 39-over-par score.
The Blue Devils, who also won team titles in 1999 and 2002, earned its third NCAA women's golf title, tying San Jose State and Arizona State for second most all-time.
"This was special in another way," said Duke head coach Dan Brooks in comparing the two previous titles. "It's a little harder to explain. These gals had something in the team that showed a lot of maturity and they pulled it together."
Auburn's four-person team ended in third at 40-over, while Pepperdine (43- over) and California (44-over) rounded out the top five in the team competition.
Grzebien, who became the third Blue Devil to win an individual championship, shot a two-over-par 286 in the four-day event. The sophomore held a four stroke lead coming into the final round and held on for a one-stroke win over University of Virginia sophomore Leah Wigger.
"I didn't look at the scoreboard once," said Grzebien, who shot a two-over 73 on the final day. "So I didn't know. It was exciting. It's really special. I just put my head down and walked past the scoreboards. I didn't want to look at the numbers. I've played well, but I'm just starting to get where everything is coming together and I'm shooting better numbers."
Wigger shot a two-under 69 on Friday to finish at three-over.
UCLA freshman Amie Cochran and Duke's Brittany Lang ended in a tie for third at four-over. Auburn's Nicole Hage was next at five-over, while California's Claire Dury and Pepperdine's Carolina Llano were tied for sixth at six-over.
