Williamsburg, VA (My Sportsbook) - Heavy rain at the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill forced the cancellation of play on Friday.
The second round began early Friday and just over three hours of golf was played. However, play was halted just before 11:00 a.m. (et) and by noon the round was declared a wash.
Those players who did get action in on Friday on the River Course at Kingsmill Golf Club will have their scores erased and the second round will begin anew Saturday morning at 7:15 a.m.
The current plan is for those who make the cut to tee off split tees and to play the final 36 holes on Sunday.
Silvia Cavalleri and Catrin Nilsmark share the lead at four-under-par 67. Both players benefited from the wash out as Nilsmark was three-over par through five holes and Cavalleri was also three-over through six holes.
Natalie Gulbis had moved to three-under to join Laura Diaz, Cristie Kerr and Kristen Samp atop the leaderboard before play was called for the day. Diaz, Kerr, Samp, Jill McGill and Leta Lindley share third place at three-under 68.
The big story this week, however, is Annika Sorenstam. The Swede is going for her sixth straight win, which would set an LPGA Tour record for consecutive titles. Sorenstam opened with a five-over 76, which snapped her streak of 43 straight rounds of par or better.
Shi Hyun Ahn, Grace Park, Jan Stephenson, Mi Hyun Kim and Gulbis are among 16 players tied for eighth place at two-under-par 69.
Se Ri Pak, the defending champion, posted an eight-over-par 79 on Thursday.
