Hoover, AL (My Sportsbook) - Charlotte secured a spot in the men's College Cup final on Friday after beating Creighton 4-1 in penalty kicks in the first semifinal. The match finished scoreless after 110 minutes of play but the 49ers converted all four of their penalty kicks in the shootout, while Creighton managed to beat goalkeeper Gavin Dawson, who entered the match after full time, just once. Creighton came into the contest as the favorite and controlled play in the first half as Bruno Castro nearly found the back of the net from a free kick which forced a diving save from goalkeeper Klay Davis. A Charlotte defender redirected the ball off his own crossbar midway through the opening half, while Davis did well to keep the match scoreless when he tipped a header from Andrew Ribeiro over the net. The second half was more cautious but the Blue Jays again managed to generate the best chance as Ethan Finlay saw his header from two yards out hit the crossbar. Charlotte finally produced a good opportunity in the first overtime period when Donnie Smith got into the penalty area on the left and forced a good save at the near post from goalkeeper Brian Holt. However, the 49ers were the more confident side as the game went to penalty kicks and Dawson produced a save on Creighton's Kris Clark while Finlay fired his shot over the net. Isaac Cowles then sealed the win by sending Holt the wrong way, putting Charlotte in the title game on Sunday against the winner of Friday's other semifinal between ULCA and North Carolina.
