Lake Buena Vista, FL (My Sportsbook) - Penn State running back Larry Johnson was the big winner during Thursday's college
football awards show, winning three trophies, including the Maxwell Award as the nation's best all-around player.
Johnson, a finalist for the Heisman Trophy, also captured the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back and won the Walter Camp Award as the top player in the country.
The senior finished the year with 2,015 rushing yards and averaged 8.0 yards per carry. He also scored 20 rushing touchdowns and became the ninth player in NCAA Division I-A history to rush for 2,000 yards in a season.
Johnson averaged 167.9 yards per game on the ground to lead the nation and had eight 100-yard rushing games this season, including four with more than 200 yards. He also set a team-record with 327 rushing yards against Indiana on November 16.
The last Penn State player to win the Maxwell Award was quarterback Kerry Collins in 1994. Johnson will try to become only the second Nittany Lion to win the Heisman, joining running back John Cappelletti in 1973.
The other Maxwell finalists were quarterbacks Brad Banks of Iowa and Miami- Florida's Ken Dorsey, who was last year's Maxwell winner. Both are also Heisman finalists, along with Southern California's Carson Palmer and Miami running back Willis McGahee.
Johnson beat out McGahee and Colorado's Chris Brown for the Doak Walker Award.
Banks, meanwhile, was honored Thursday night with the Davey O'Brien Award as the nation's best quarterback. Dorsey and Palmer were also finalists for the award.
Other award winners were Maryland linebacker E.J. Henderson -- Bednarik (best defensive player); Washington State defensive tackle Rien Long -- Outland (best interior lineman); Michigan State's Charles Rogers -- Biletnikoff (best wide receiver); Kansas State's Terence Newman -- Thorpe (best defensive back); and Colorado's Mark Mariscal -- Ray Guy (best punter).
