East Rutherford, NJ (My Sportsbook) - After dominating its first three games in group play at the Gold Cup, Mexico needed a goal from Javier Hernandez in the 65th minute to earn a 2-1 win over Guatemala on Saturday in a quarterfinal match. Mexico outscored its three opponents in the opening round by a combined score of 14-1, but Guatemala took the lead after just four minutes as Carlos Ruiz found room in the center of the penalty area to volley home a long ball from Elias Vasquez. The game remained 1-0 into the second half, but Mexico needed just three minutes to equalize as a scramble in front of the Guatemala net resulted in Aldo De Nigris slamming the ball past goalkeeper Ricardo Jerez from a few yards. Pablo Barrera then set up the winner when he threaded a pass through traffic and into the penalty area for Hernandez to flick past Jerez with his heel. The win puts Mexico into the semifinals of the competition on Wednesday, where El Tri will face Honduras, which won its quarterfinal match against Costa Rica on penalty kicks earlier in the day. The two sides played to a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes, but Costa Rica had two shots come back off the crossbar in the shootout, while Honduras converted all four of its attempts to win, 4-2.
