Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Team USA fared well in Rotterdam this weekend in individual competition as Alicia Sacramone (Winchester, Mass.) won the world vault title at the 2010 World Championships at the Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam, Netherlands. Sacramone won gold with a 15.200, the average of her two vault scores, and became just the second U.S. woman to win the world vault title.
Sacramone's teammate Rebecca Bross (Plano, Texas) won the silver for the balance beam as well as a bronze medal for the uneven bars. On the uneven bars, Bross scored a 15.066 for the bronze medal, while Bridget Sloan (Pittsboro, Ind.) was fourth at 14.666.
In the men's field, Jonathan Horton (Houston, Texas) was the lone medal winner for the U.S. in individual competition winning, the men's all-around bronze medal.
The U.S. women won the team silver medal, finishing just 0.201 points behind Russia. The women continued their streak of winning a team medal at every World Championships and Olympic Games since 2000.
In the battle for the bronze medal, the U.S. men posted a team total of 268.012, which put them behind Germany's 271.252. China and Japan were neck and neck for the gold medal, with China coming out on top 274.997 to 273.769.
For the entire World Championships, the USA won one gold, two silver and three bronze medals for a total of six medals.
ARCHERY: Team USA Sets Records, Wins Medals at Pan Am Championships
Olympian and current No. 1 world-ranked archer Brady Ellison (Chula Vista, Calif.) led Team USA this weekend at the 2010 Pan American Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico when he won two gold medals in the 30 and 50 meters and set a new record of 1346 overall points.
Ellison's teammate and USA Archery resident athlete Jacob Wukie (Oak Harbor, Ohio) finished third, shooting a 1333.
For the women, four-time Olympian Khatuna Lorig (Bloomfield, N.J.) retained a solid lead throughout the qualifying round and ended with a 1344. In addition to medaling at 30, 60 and 70 meters, Lorig also set new records at all three distances as well as for the qualifying round score.
BADMINTON: Ketpura wins gold at 2010 Pan American Games
Team USA's Cee Ketpura (Orange, Calif.) won the women's singles title at the 2010 Pan American Badminton Championships Curitiba, Brazil this weekend with a victory over Michelle Li of Canada (17-21, 21-17, 21-19).
The men's side was highlighted with two semi-final appearances as Sattawat Pongnairat (San Francisco, Calif.) and Nicholas Jinadasa (Long Beach, Calif.) both fought hard, but eventually fell in the final four. Pongnairat battled No. 1 seeded Stephan Wojcikiewica of Canada, but lost (15-21 21-16 21- 19).
In team news, the U.S. captured the silver medal as Team USA fell three matches to one to Team Canada on Oct. 20. Pongnairat led Team USA with his two games to one victory in men's singles over Team Canada's Stephan Wojcikiewicz (18-21, 21-13 and 21-18).
FIGURE SKATING: Davis, White outclass competition at NHK Trophy
Meryl Davis (Bloomfield, Mich.) and Charlie White (Bloomfield, Mich.) opened their season in style, winning the pair's event at Japan's NHK Trophy by 23.64 points on Oct. 23 in Nagoya, Japan.
The duo ended the event with 165.21 points overall.
2010 Olympian Rachel Flatt (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won the silver medal in the ladies competition as the U.S. champion edged out Italian gold medalist Carolina Kostner narrowly on 0.01 points to win the free skating portion and finished in second with 161.04 points.
On the men's event, Jeremy Abbott (Aspen, Colo.) was second with a solid outing scoring 218.19 points. Japan's Daisuke Takahashi topped Abbot with a score of 234.79.
JUDO: Kossor, Cohen and Eldred Win New York Open
Two-time National Champion, Nick Kossor (Glenville, N.Y.) won his first medal at the 2010 New York Open Judo Championships at Hunter College in New York City on Oct. 24. Kosser won gold in the 60kg division and captured Outstanding Competitor honors in the process.
Competing in the 73kg division, five-time World Cup medalist Michael Eldred (Fruitland, Idaho) also earned his first gold while Pan American medalist Aaron Cohen (Buffalo Grove, Ill.) earned his third New York Open title and the first in the 90kg division.
In other news, Max Golembo (Vernon Hills, Ill.) became the first junior U.S. male to fight in the medal round since 1992 when he competed in the 81kg division at the Junior World Championships in Agadir, Morocco. Golembo finished in fifth place overall.
SKELETON: Bernotas and O'Shea Win First Skeleton Selection Races
Eric Bernotas (Avondale, Pa.) and Annie O'Shea (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) made their bids for the 2010-2011 U.S. national skeleton team after sliding to victory in their respective fields on Oct. 22 at the 2010-10 National Team Selection races held at the Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y.
Just one-hundredth of a second behind Bernotas was Matt Antoine (Prairie du Chien, Wisc.) with a total time of 1:50.07 while 2010 Olympian John Daly (Smithtown, N.Y.) was third with a two-run total of 1:50.45.
O'Shea slid runs of 56.86 and 57.19 seconds to lead the field from start to finish while veteran Rebecca Sorensen (Fort Collins, Colo.) was in second followed by Rachelle Rasmussen (Belmont, Calif.) in third with a total time of 1:54.90.
SKIING: Ligety medals in Soelden
Alpine skier Ted Ligety (Park City, Utah) finished in second place at the 2010 Soelden Open in Soelden, Austria just .02 seconds behind France's Cyprien Richard in the season opener.
Olympic gold medalist Bode Miller (Franconia, N.H.) finished in 23rd.
The women were led by Torino Olympic champ Julia Mancuso (Squaw Valley, Calif.) who paced the U.S. Ski Team finishing in 12th followed by Lindsey Vonn (Vail, Colo.) in 18th and Sarah Schleper (Vail, Colo.) in 19th, who posted the fourth fastest time in the second run.
SPEEDSKATING: U.S. Wins 10 Medals at World Cup in Montreal
The Fall 2010 U.S. Short Track Team won an impressive 10 medals at the season opening ISU World Cup in Montreal.
In Sunday's races, 2010 Olympic silver and bronze medalist Katherine Reutter (Champaign, Ill.) was first to medal with a win in the second ladies 1500m A final.
2010 Olympic bronze medalist Travis Jayner (Midland, Mich.) skated to a silver in the second men's 1500m A final with a time of 2:23.496, behind Guillaume Bastille (CAN), who finished with a time of 2:23.374.
Simon Cho (Laurel, MD), 2010 Olympic bronze medalist, took silver in the men's 500m, finishing at 42.076, following closely behind Canadian Charles Hamelin who won the race with a time of 41.720.
In Sunday's relay events, the ladies' squad of Reutter, Lana Gehring (Glenview, Ill.), Alyson Dudek (Hales Corners, Wis.) and Jessica Smith (Melvindale, Mich.) took silver with a time of 4:17.550, behind China. The men's team - Jeff Simon (Las Vegas, Nev.), Cho, Jayner and Kyle Carr (Peach Tree City, Ga.) - finished third at 7:07.511, behind Canada and France.
Saturday's results also included a gold for Ruetter in the 1000m, gold for Gehring in the first 1500m A final, gold for Jeff Simon and silver for Simon Cho in the first 1500m A final, and a bronze for Jayner in the 1000m.
In long track news, 2010 Olympians Tucker Fredricks (Janesville, Wis.) and Heather Richardson (High Point, N.C.) swept the 500m distances at the U.S. Single Distance Long Track Speed Skating Championships/ Long Track American Cup I at Milwaukee's Pettit National Ice Center.
In the first of two ladies' 500m events, 2010 Olympian Richardson won with a time of 38.41 seconds, skating close to a U.S. record pace.
In the first men's 500m distance, reigning World Cup Champion and 2010 Olympian Fredricks took first with a time of 35.45 seconds, just 0.39 seconds ahead of two-time Olympic gold and silver medalist Shani Davis (Chicago, Ill.) in second with a time of 35.84. The second men's 500m was a tight race with Fredricks winning with a time of 35.29, followed closely by Parker Vance (Kearns, Utah) skating a personal best at the Pettit at 35.56.
In the second ladies' 500m event, Richardson, who finished sixth in the 500m at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games finished first with a time of 39.15. Richardson also won the 1000m distance event with a time of 1:17.30.
On Sunday, Davis, the silver medalist at 1500m in the last two Olympic Winter Games, won that distance in 1:45.59. Davis also topped the 1000m distance finishing first at 1:08.73. In the ladies' 1500m event, Rookard finished in first place with a time of 2:01.09.
Rookard added another win in the 3,000m.
