Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - The USA Basketball Women's World Championship Team (9-0) bested host Czech Republic (6-3) and finished the 2010 FIVB World Championships with an 89-69 gold-medal victory. The win saw four players score in double digits, led by a game-high 18 points from Angel McCoughtry (Atlanta Dream) while Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury) contributed 16 points. Tina Charles (Connecticut Sun) tossed in 13 points and grabbed a game- best 10 boards and Sue Bird (Seattle Storm) chipped in 11 points and dished out three assists.

With the gold medal victory, the U.S. became the first team to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games.

BOWLING: Team USA Wins Team, All-Events at PABCON Women's Championships

Shannon O'Keefe (Arlington, Texas) led Team USA to a team gold medal at the 2010 Pan American Bowling Confederation Women's Championships at Sunset Station Hotel in Las Vegas, Nev., Sept.

30. The Team USA women posted a 6,267 six-game total and claimed the coveted title for the 13th time in the 15 years that the five-player team event has been part of the PABCON Women's Championships.

Team USA consisted of O'Keefe, Liz Johnson (Cheektowaga, N.Y.), Shannon Pluhowsky (Phoenix, Ariz.), Kelly Kulick (Union, N.J.), Stefanie Nation (Reno, Nev.) and Tennelle Milligan (Arlington, Texas).

In other results, Kulick won the bronze medal in the women's singles competition and teamed up with Pluhowsky to take the gold in the doubles division where the duo set a new record of 2,780 points. The previous record was 2,621 by Guatemala's Zussie de Machon and Sofia Granda at the 2009 PABCON Championships in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

BOXING: China Pulls Out a Slim Victory Over the United States in the USA vs. China Duel

China won a slim one-bout victory over the United States on Oct. 1 in New York City, with China claiming six wins to five in the USA vs. China duel.

Winning for Team USA were Patricia Manuel (Commerce, Calif.), Eric Flores (Ingle, Calif.) and light welterweight Michael Reed (Waldorf, Md.). Alyssa DeFazio (Phoenix, Ariz.) pulled out a tiebreaker victory over 2010 World Championships silver medalist Jinzi Li in the American boxer's international debut while Jesse Hart (Philadelphia, Pa.) took a 15-7 decision over Jianting Zhang.

CYCLING: Feiss Wins Two National Titles in Carson at Elite Track Nationals; Phinney Doubles Up

Twenty-one-year-old Dana Feiss (Telford, Pa.) won two national titles this weekend at the 2010 USA Cycling Elite Track National Championships at the ADT Event Center Velodrome in Carson, Calif. Feiss beat out defending champ Christin Walker (Houston, Texas) in the women's keirin event on Sept. 30 and also went on to win the women's sprint event. In the sprint, she beat Walker again in the gold-medal round.

The women's points race saw Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo.) and Hanan Alves-Hyde (Oakland, Calif.) dominate the 25-kilometer, 100-lap competition to take first and second respectively.

On the men's side, 2004 Olympian Giddeon Massie (Cypress, Calif.) won both the men's time test with a time of 1:04.022 and the sprint event, while Matt Baranoski (Perkasie, Pa.) beat out Massie in the kierin final. In the men's 30- kilometer points race, Daniel Holt (Royal Oak, Mich.) claimed the national title.

The omnium events could have been considered the Bobby Lea (Mertztown. Pa.) and Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif.) show. Lea won four of the six men's events to take the national title while Hammer barely missed out on a sweep of the women's events, claiming five victories and one second-place finish to earn the omnium title.

In the team sprint competition, Cari Higgins (Boulder, Colo.) and Jennie Reed (Kirkland, Wash.) became the first national championship team to win in madison as the event became a national championship event for the women this year.

In the men's team sprint, Racelab U-23 Cycling Team's Danny Heeley (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Ian Moir (Long Beach, Calif.) won the last sprint to earn the national title.

The U.S. team wrapped up the 2010 UCI Road World Championships with two medals in the form of gold and bronze; both by Taylor Phinney (Boulder, Colo.) in the U23 time trial and road race respectively. Amber Neben (Irvine, Calif.), Evelyn Stevens (New York, N.Y.) and David Zabriskie (Los Angeles, Calif.) all recorded top ten finishes in the time trial while Kathryn Curi-Mattis (Mountain View, Calif.) was awarded the Tissot Award for the most time spent in the front of the elite women's road race as was Ben King (North Garden, Va./Trek-Livestrong) in the U23 men's road race.

EQUESTRIAN: Steffen Peters and Ravel Earn Two Bronze Medals at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games

Olympian Steffen Peters (San Diego, Calif.) and his partner, Ravel, earned two hard-fought bronze medals in the individual and freestyle dressage events at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Ky. on Oct. 1. The medals were the first for an American dressage rider at the World Championships and the first medal for an American at a World Championships since 1990.

FENCING: Gold and Silver for U.S. Vets

Jane Eyre (Medford, N.J.) won the gold medal in the 50-59 women's saber event and teammate Marchel Miernik (Irvington, N.Y.) earned silver in the Men's 70+ Foil this weekend at The World Veteran Fencing Championships in Porec, Croatia.

FIGURE SKATING: Farris Wins Gold at Junior Grand Prix

Junior skater Joshua Farris (Renton, Wash.) won the gold medal at the fifth annual 2010- 2011 ISU Junior Grand Prix Series this weekend in Sheffield, Great Britain. Farris scored a total 187.74 points to win the event.

Yasmin Siraj (Brookline, Mass.) was the top American female finisher and ended the individual junior girl's competition with 161.75 points, good enough for second place.

JUDO: Harrison Gets Another Gold; Team USA Wins 16 Medals in 16 Divisions at Pan Am U13 Championships

Kayla Harrison (Wakefield, Mass.) captured a gold medal Sunday at the European Judo Union World Cup for Women in Birmingham, England.

She defeated Anastasia Dmitrieva of Russia in the opening round, and then went on to beat Jennifer Kuypers of Netherlands and Poland's Daria Pogorzelec.

In the final, she faced Lucie Louette of France. Both athletes were tied going into the final minute of the bout, but with 38 seconds left, Harrison connected with a powerful ouchi gari (inside leg reap) to throw the Frenchwoman and end the match decisively.

Team USA won more medals than any other nation at the Pan American U13 Championships in Panama City, Panama on Friday with each of the 16 U.S. competitors earning a trip to the podium.

Teniya Alo (Honolulu, Hawaii) won each of her three matches in the 31kg division by ippon (instant win), throwing Elianeth Uribe of Venezuela for ippon with a seoi nage (shoulder throw) in the final.

Gabriela Prado (Coral Springs, Fla.) also won gold, competing in the 42kg division. Prado went 3-0, winning each match by ippon and throwing Vitoria Andrade of Brazil with a tai o toshi (body drop throw) in the final.

SPEEDSKATING: Olympians Fare Well at American Cup Short Track

2010 Olympic bronze medalist Lana Gehring (Glenview, Ill.) continued a dominating weekend of racing winning both the 1000m and 1500m A Finals at the Pettit National Ice Center in Milwaukee, Wis. Gehring also swept the 500m and 1500m A Finals on Sept. 30 to take the top spot in overall American Cup point standings and securing her spot on the 2010 fall U.S. World Cup Short Track Team.

Olympic bronze medalist, Alyson Dudek (Hales Corners, Wis.), and Olympic silver and bronze medalist Katherine Reutter (Champaign, Ill.) also had a strong weekends and both qualified for the World Cup Team as well.

Kyle Carr (Peach Tree City, Ga.) won the men's 1000m A Final, followed by 2010 Olympic bronze medalists Simon Cho (Laurel, Md.) in second and Travis Jayner (Midland, Mich.) in third.

TAEKWONDO: Stephen Lambdin Golden in England

U-24 National Team member Stephen Lambdin (Colleyville, Texas) captured the gold medal in the men's heavyweight division on Sept. 25 at the 3rd BTCB British Taekwondo International Championships in Manchester, England. Lambdin defeated Hossein Tajik of Iran in the final by a score of 2-1.

TRACK AND FIELD: U.S. Champions Crowned in Twin Cities

Four U.S. champions were crowned Oct. 3 as the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon hosted the USA Men's Marathon, Masters Marathon and Women's 10 Mile Championships in Minneapolis, Minn.

Katie McGregor (Saint Louis Park, Minn.), won her seventh career U.S. title in 54:21 in the Women's 10 Mile Championship while Sergio Reyes (Palmdale, Calif.) took the men's marathon title in 2:14:02 and Mbarak Hussein (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Susan Loken (Phoenix, Ariz.) took the men's and women's masters titles in 2:16:58 and 2:44:43 respectively.

TRIATHLON: Clifford, Parr Grab Titles at Long Course Nationals

Tom Clifford (Wilmington, N.C.) and Alicia Parr (Durhman, N.C.) bested the competition on Oct. 2 to claim overall titles as the national championship season came to a close at the USA Triathlon Long Course National Championship in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

The winner of the women's 40-44 age group, Parr led the women with a time of 4:01:49 to nab her second masters title in two weeks after winning the female masters title last weekend in Tuscaloosa at USAT's Age Group National Championship. Parr is the first-ever female masters athlete (age 40 and up) to capture an overall USAT national title.

On the men's side, Clifford posted the fastest time of the day in the long course event, finishing the 56-mile bike, 13.1-mile run in 3 hours, 39 minutes, 48 seconds.

WEIGHTLIFTING: Spealler Wins CrossFit / USAW Open

Chris Spealler (Oakley, Utah) won the 2010 CrossFit/USA Weightlifting Open Oct. 1 at Cheyenne Mountain Resort in Colorado Springs, Colo. Spealler dominated the CrossFit portion of the event, completing more than eight rounds of the triplet in just 10 minutes besting silver medalist Robert Sirkis (Irving, Texas) by more than four rounds in an event that included as many rounds of six squat cleans (55kg), 12 pull-ups and 24 double unders as could be completed in the allotted time.

Spealler entered the CrossFit portion of the event following the weightlifting sessions in which his best snatch was 91kg and best clean and jerk was 109kg - a result that could earn him as high as a top-eight U.S. ranking in the division.

On the women's side, Sarah Veress (San Francisco, Calif.) won the 75kg division snatching 75kg on her second attempt and lifting 89kg for her second clean and jerk, to earn a total of 164kg - the highest in her weight division by nine kilograms. During the CrossFit portion of the competition, Veress completed just over five rounds of the triplet.

WRESTLING: Hrovat Goes 2-1 at Dmitry Korkin Memorial in Russia

2008 Olympian Andy Hrovat (Colorado Springs, Colo.) placed seventh at 84 kg/185 lbs. with a 2-1 record at the third annual Dmitry Korkin Memorial wrestling tournament in Yakutsk, Republic of Sakha on Oct. 4. Hrovat opened with wins over Victor Vavilov of Yakutia, Russia and Ermek Bayduashev of Kazakhstan. He was then defeated by Robert Tavgazov of Ossetia, Russia, but when Tavgazov failed to make the finals, Hrovat was not eligible for the repechage.

VOLLEYBALL: U.S. Men Among Final 12 Teams at World Championships

The U.S. Men's National Volleyball Team is one of the final 12 teams still playing at the FIVB World Championship after going 1-1 in the Pool L bracket. The team defeated Cameroon in Ancona, Italy in a five set battle 3-2 (23-25, 25-14, 25-27, 25-20, 15-7) and advanced to the Pool O bracket when Czech Republic topped Cameroon.

The U.S. team now takes on host nation Italy on Oct. 5.

The U.S. men are being led in scoring by opposite Clay Stanley (Honolulu, Hawaii), who has 93 points on 72 kills, seven blocks and 14 aces. He is fifth among all scorers and his 14 aces put him second among all servers.

WEEKLY PREVIEW - OCTOBER 5-11

BOXING: The first 2012 Olympic Trials Qualifier is set for Oct. 4-9 at the Police Athletic League National Boxing Championships in San Antonio, Texas.

CANOE/KAYAK: Canoe Sprint Pan Am Championships are set to take place in Mexico City, Mexico, Oct. 7-10.

EQUESTRIAN: The U.S. Show Jumping team competes this week at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.

The speed competition took place Oct. 4 while the team competition will take place on Oct. 5 and individual competition will begin Oct. 8.

FIGURE SKATING: The 2010-11 U.S. Figure Skating Qualifying Season takes place Oct. 8-12 in three different cities.

The Eastern Great Lakes event will be hosted by Nashville FSC in Nashville, Tenn., the New England event takes place in Simsbury, Conn., and the Southwest Pacific event will take place in Burbank, Calif.

SOCCER: USA Soccer's Women's National Team will face China once again on Oct. 6 in an international friendly competition at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. The women defeated China on Oct. 2 by a score of 2-1 in Kennesaw, Ga.
