New Haven, CT (My Sportsbook) - University of Miami-Florida senior quarterback Ken Dorsey and sophomore running back Willis McGahee are among five finalists for the Walter Camp Football Foundation Player of the Year Award, the foundation announced Wednesday.
Iowa senior quarterback Brad Banks, Southern California senior quarterback Carson Palmer and Penn State senior running back Larry Johnson are also finalists for the award, which will be presented on December 12.
The winner is selected by a vote of all Division I-A head coaches and sports information directors, and will receive his trophy during the foundation's annual national awards banquet on February 8, 2003 at Yale University.
Dorsey and McGahee have led the Hurricanes to an 11-0 record this season.
Dorsey has completed 182-of-330 passes for 2,773 yards with 24 touchdowns. He has an amazing 37-1 record as the starter for Miami, which has won 33 games in a row.
McGahee has set Miami's all-time single-season school records with 1,481 yards and 21 touchdowns this season in his first year as the starter in the backfield. McGahee has crossed the 100-yard rushing plateau in 9-of-11 games this season.
Banks was recently named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year. He holds the top quarterback rating in the nation at 166.1 after leading the Hawkeyes to an 11-1 record and a berth in a BCS bowl game. He has completed 155-of-258 passes for 2,369 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Palmer completed 62.9 percent of his passes (288-of-458) for 3,639 yards and 32 touchdowns for the Trojans this season. He averaged 334 yards a game and threw for 23 touchdowns in his final six regular-season contests.
Finally, Johnson became the ninth player in NCAA Division I-A history to rush for more than 2,000 yards, finishing his regular season with 2,015 yards on 251 carries with 20 touchdowns. Johnson leads the nation in rushing (167.9 ypg) and all-purpose yardage (214.5 ypg) and is second in scoring (11.67 ppg). He averaged 232.7 yards in his last six games.
