Foxboro, MA (My Sportsbook) - The New England Patriots released defensive lineman Damione Lewis and offensive lineman Eric Ghiaciuc on Friday, getting an early start on their "cut-down day" maneuvers. Lewis, a nine-year NFL veteran and former first-round draft choice of the St. Louis Rams, was signed by the Patriots on April 10. Lewis' roster spot was believed to be more secure after veteran end Ty Warren was lost for the year due to a hip injury last month, but Lewis ultimately proved surplus to needs. Lewis, formerly with the Rams (2001-05) and Panthers (2006-09), has 22.5 sacks in nine seasons since being taken 12th overall out of Miami-Florida in 2001. Ghiaciuc, who was signed by the Patriots on Aug 4 to bolster an offensive line group reeling due to injuries and the holdout of guard Logan Mankins, also failed to survive the chopping block. A 2005 fourth-round pick of the Bengals, the former Central Michigan standout appeared in 48 games with the Bengals from 2005-08 and was on the San Diego Chargers' roster last season. New England and the rest of the NFL has until Saturday's 6 p.m. (et) NFL deadline to reduce rosters to 53 players.
