Calgary, AB (My Sportsbook) - The National Hockey League confirmed on Wednesday that a second outdoor game will be played next season, an all- Canadian matchup between the Montreal Canadiens and Calgary Flames. The game is scheduled for February 20 at McMahon Stadium in Calgary, and will be the first outdoor NHL game in Canada since the 2003 Heritage Classic between the Canadiens and Oilers that was contested at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium. In that game, Montreal took a 4-3 victory with temperatures hovering below zero degrees Fahrenheit in November. However, it's hoped that with a late- February date, and a more southerly location, relatively warmer weather will make the experience more tolerable for all involved. McMahon Stadium hosts the University of Calgary as well as the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League, and can seat more than 35,000 spectators. Montreal and Calgary have competed in a pair of Stanley Cup Finals, with the Canadiens winning in a five-game series back in 1986, and the Flames emerging with a six-game triumph in 1989. That series was the last time two Canadian teams played for the NHL title. The 2011 Winter Classic, the league's premier outdoor event, will be held at Pittsburgh's Heinz Field on New Year's Day, featuring the Washington Capitals and Pittsburgh Penguins.
