Toronto, ON (My Sportsbook) - The Saskatchewan Roughriders are expecting to have their No. 1 running back in the lineup when they face the Edmonton Eskimos in the West Division semifinal Sunday.
Kenton Keith, who finished third in CFL rushing this year with 1,154 yards, didn't play in Saskatchewan's 40-38 loss to the B.C. Lions last weekend due to the lingering effects of a concussion suffered October 17.
Keith was the Roughriders' outstanding player nominee and a West Division all- star. He cracked the top-three in rushing this season despite appearing in 14 games. Keith missed the start of the 2004 campaign after attending the training camp of the NFL's New York Jets.
If Keith can't play, the Roughriders have a more than capable backup in Corey Holmes. Holmes started against B.C. and rushed for 65 yards on 13 carries. On the season, Holmes ran for 635 yards on 100 carries with two touchdowns.
But Holmes is much more than just a backup running back.
He is Saskatchewan's primary kickoff and punt returner and also sees some playing time at slot back. Holmes finished the season as the CFL's leader in all-purpose yards with 2,704, one more than Hamilton's Craig Yeast.
FIGHTING MAD: Toronto Argonauts head coach Mike (Pinball) Clemons got a clear indication this week that his team was ready for its East Division semifinal game Friday night at SkyDome against the arch-rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats.
On Wednesday, receiver Robert Baker and defensive back Chuck Winters were involved in two separate fights during practice. The fisticuffs got so bad that teammates were needed to halt the second incident.
Afterwards, Clemons brought the two players together to resolve their differences.
"That's football," Clemons said. "It's playoff time so you can understand that happening."
DALEY REMAINS?: The Winnipeg Blue Bombers appear ready to remove the term interim from Jim Daley's job title.
Daley is the Blue Bombers' first choice as head coach. Daley took over the job when Dave Ritchie was fired in August and did a nice job of keeping Winnipeg in playoff contention through to the final weeks of the season. Daley compiled a 5-6 record while serving as the club's head coach. The Bombers finished fourth in the West Division with a 7-11 record.
Daley headed to Calgary this weekend to talk it over with his wife and is expected to get together with the Bombers on Monday. If Daley accepts the job, he will be allowed to hire his own assistant coaches.
But even if Daley and the Bombers reach an agreement, the CFL club won't be able to formally announce it until after the Grey Cup because the league has informed its member clubs not to make any major announcements until after the November 21 game in Ottawa.
OBIE IN OTTAWA?: The Ottawa Renegades aren't expected to re-new the contract of general manager Eric Tillman in the off-season, which is creating a lot of talk about who will replace Tillman once his deal expires?
The most prominent name to surface is that of Bob O'Billovich, the B.C. Lions' player-personnel director. O'Billovich spent time in Ottawa as a player and assistant coach and has head-coaching experience with Toronto (1982-'89, ‘93-'95) and B.C. (‘90-'92). In 14 seasons as a CFL head coach, O'Billovich amassed a 107-104-3 regular-season record, 5-6 playoff mark and was 1-2 in the Grey Cup.
