Providence, RI (My Sportsbook) - The Bowl Championship Series announced Tuesday an updated list of schools under consideration for selection to the Fiesta Bowl, Sugar Bowl, Orange Bowl and Rose Bowl.
Miami assured itself of a BCS bowl bid as the Big East representative with its win over Syracuse last weekend. If the Big East tiebreaker needs to be applied, the Hurricanes hold the edge. Miami hosts Big East foe and 18th- ranked Virginia Tech this Saturday.
Florida State, the Atlantic Coast Conference representative, has already clinched a berth in the BCS. Ohio State, the Big Ten co-champion, has also been assured of a BCS selection by virtue of its conference tiebreaker.
The representatives from the other participating conferences (Big 12, Pac-10 and Southeastern), who receive an automatic bid to one of the BCS bowls, have not been determined.
The Big 12, Pac-10 and SEC are down to two possible teams with those teams to be decided this weekend. The final three teams will come from the winner of the respective conference championship games. Colorado will face Oklahoma for the Big 12 title, while Southern California plays Washington State with the Pac-10 championship up for grabs and Arkansas squares off against Georgia for the SEC crown.
Iowa, Kansas State, Notre Dame and Texas are also under consideration for the two at-large positions.
All other institutions have been released for consideration by other bowls. To qualify for the at-large pool to a BCS bowl, teams must have nine regular- season wins (not including wins in exempt games) and be ranked in the top 12 of the final BCS standings on December 8.
There are ways for the aforementioned teams to qualify automatically for an at-large berth. If Notre Dame finishes in the top six of the final BCS standings, it is guaranteed an at-large slot. If the team that is No. 3 in the final BCS poll is an at-large team, it is guaranteed a berth. If any at-large spots remain unfilled after applying the previous criteria, and the fourth- ranked club is an at-large team, it is guaranteed a berth.
Teams ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS standings will participate in the Fiesta Bowl on January 3. Those teams are expected to be Ohio State and Miami.
