Brooklyn, MI (My Sportsbook) - Denny Hamlin continued his dominance in the Sprint Cup Series by easily winning Sunday's Heluva Good! Sour Cream Dips 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
Hamlin led a race-high 123 laps and held a 10-second advantage over Kasey Kahne before the last caution came for debris on the track with 19 laps remaining. He quickly pulled away from Kahne after the final restart with 14 laps to go, and then cruised to his series-leading fifth victory of the season and the 13th of his career.
"It's just been a great year so far," Hamlin said. "It's so easy to drive cars like this. They make me look good, but I can tell you, it's the work of guys like [crew chief] Mike Ford and the entire team."
Hamlin won last week at Pocono, where the race concluded in dramatic fashion. Kevin Harvick bumped Hamlin's Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, Joey Logano, and put him into a spin while the two were battling for a top-five position in the closing laps. The incident set up a green-white checkered finish. Hamlin won after a nine-car pileup triggered by Kahne on the final lap of the overtime finish ended the race under caution.
Since NASCAR replaced the rear wing with the spoiler on the current Sprint Cup cars in late March, Hamlin has won five of the last 10 races. He struggled early in the season and then underwent knee surgery to repair his ACL days after he won his first race of the season at Martinsville.
"The best car won, and that's all you can ask for," Hamlin added.
Kahne finished a season-best second.
"It's nice to get a good finish," Kahne said. "We've had some ups and downs throughout the season, so it was nice to get a good, solid finish."
Kahne is in the last year of his contract with Richard Petty Motorsports. His plans for next season remain uncertain before he replaces Mark Martin in the No.5 Chevrolet at Hendrick Motorsports in 2012.
Kurt Busch, the pole sitter, took the third spot, while Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart rounded out the top-five.
"We had a strong car early on, and it just seemed like we lost a little bit of speed as the race went on," Busch said.
Four-time defending series champion Jimmie Johnson finished sixth, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. came in seventh. Earnhardt Jr.'s last Cup win came two years ago at Michigan.
Jeff Burton was eighth, followed by Greg Biffle and Logano.
The 400-mile race at Michigan ran relatively tame compared to Pocono. Two of the four cautions here came for debris on the track. Marcos Ambrose and Regan Smith bumped into each other early in the race, with Ambrose spinning on the frontstretch. Then at the half-way point, Red Bull Racing teammates Casey Mears and Scott Speed made contact, as Mears slammed into the wall and ended his race early with a 36th-place finish. He has been substituting for Brian Vickers, who continues to be treated for blood clots.
Despite a 19th-place finish, Kevin Harvick remained the points leader. Harvick holds a 22-point advantage over Kyle Busch, who finished one spot behind in 20th. Hamlin moved to within 47 points of the lead.
