WRESTLING: U.S. Competes at Pan American Championships in Mexico
Tervel Dlagnev (Columbus, Ohio) captured a gold medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs., the top U.S. performance at the Pan American Freestyle Championships on Sunday. Dlagnev, a 2009 World bronze medalist, won both of his matches, and did not allow a single point. In the gold-medal finals, he handily defeated Jesse Ruiz of Mexico, 7-0, 5-0. The USA placed third in the team race with 50 points. Cuba, led by six individual champions, finished with 60 points. Canada was second with 57 points, and although they had no champions, finished with a medalist in all seven weight classes. Justin Ruiz (Boise, Idaho) won a gold medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., the top performance for the United States in Greco- Roman wrestling on Friday. Ruiz won four straight matches in his five-athlete round-robin competition, including a clutch victory over defending Pan American champion and eventual runner-up Yasmany Lugo of Cuba.
The United States dominated the women's freestyle wrestling on Saturday, capturing the team title with four individual champions and seven medalists. Claiming individual titles were Clarissa Chun (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Deanna Rix (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 59 kg/130 lbs., Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and Ali Bernard (New Ulm, Minn.) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Chun and Pirozhkova won the Pan American Championships for the second straight year.
JUDO: Olympic Bronze Medalist Ronda Rousey Returns & Myles Porter Makes Sport History
Ronda Rousey (Santa Monica, Calif.), competing at her first major event since winning a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games, fought as an unseeded player for the first time ever at a Senior Nationals and captured a sixth national title Saturday to highlight the 2010 USA Judo Senior Nationals and World Team Trials. In other action, Kenny Hashimoto (Thornton, Colo.) also proved victorious after six Senior National medals and several stints as the No. 1- ranked player in the 66kg division. Marti Malloy (San Jose, Calif.) also won her fourth straight national title (third in the 57kg division).
Myles Porter (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won another title in the visually impaired competition, but more importantly made sport history as his silver medal in the elite senior division made him the first visually impaired athlete ever to medal at a Senior Nationals.
VOLLEYBALL: U.S. Girls' Youth National Team Wins NORCECA Gold, Berth Into Youth Olympic Games; Dalhausser and Rogers Continue Winning Ways
The U.S. Girls' Youth National Team defeated No. 1 seed Mexico 25-19, 25-21, 15-25, 25-17 during the gold-medal match of the NORCECA Girls' Youth Continental Championship held Sunday afternoon in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The U.S., ranked second in the girls' youth age division of NORCECA, won its fifth consecutive biennial NORCECA title in the age group and sixth overall. In the previous NORCECA Girls' Youth Continental Championship held in 2008 in Puerto Rico, the U.S. swept Mexico in the gold-medal match. By reaching the title match, the U.S. and Mexico had already qualified for the 2011 FIVB Girls' Youth World Championship to be held in Turkey. As the NORCECA tournament winner, the U.S. Girls' Youth National Team also earns a spot into the first- ever IOC Youth Olympics to be held in August of 2010 in Singapore.
Hometown favorite Todd Rogers and partner Phil Dalhausser, the 2008 Olympic gold medalists, won the AVP NIVEA Tour's Progressive Insurance Santa Barbara Open Benefiting Komen for the Cure on Sunday in Santa Barbara, Calif. Top- seeded Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Dalhausser (Ormond Beach, Fla.) beat 2008 Olympians Jake Gibb (Bountiful, Utah) and Sean Rosenthal (Redondo Beach, Calif.), seeded fourth, 21-13, 21-14, in the final. They didn't lose a set in their six tournament matches. On the women's side, fifth-seeded Annett Davis (Long Beach, Calif.) and Jenny Johnson- Jordan (Sherman Oaks, Calif.), who are 2000 Olympians, beat Dianne DeNecochea (Brooklyn, Mich.) and Brittany Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.), 24-22, 21-16, in the final. The last AVP victory for Johnson- Jordan and Davis came two years ago at the Santa Barbara Open.
HOCKEY: Eleven Players Added to 2010 U.S. Men's National Team
USA Hockey announced that 11 players have been added to the 2010 U.S. Men's National Team that will compete at the International Ice Hockey Federation World Men's Championship, May 7-23, in Cologne, Gelsenkirchen and Mannheim, Germany. In addition, Joe Sacco, head coach of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and a finalist for the 2010 Jack Adams Award as the league's coach of the year, joins the coaching staff as an assistant coach.
The additions include defenseman Jack Johnson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Los Angeles Kings), who was a member of the silver medal winning 2010 U.S. Olympic Men's Ice Hockey Team, defenseman Matt Greene (Grand Ledge, Mich./Los Angeles Kings) and forwards Nick Foligno (Buffalo, N.Y./Ottawa Senators/2009) and T.J. Oshie (Warroad, Minn./St. Louis Blues), Chris Kreider (Boxford, Mass./Boston College), who helped the U.S. to the gold medal at the 2010 IIHF World Junior Championship, will make his first U.S. Men's National Team appearance, goaltenders Ben Bishop (Des Peres, Mo./Peoria Rivermen) and David Leggio (Buffalo, N.Y./TPS Turku); defensemen Andy Greene (Trenton, Mich./New Jersey Devils) and Keith Yandle (Boston, Mass./Phoenix Coyotes); and forwards T.J. Galiardi (Denver, Colo./Colorado Avalanche) and Tim Kennedy (Buffalo, N.Y./Buffalo Sabres).
GYMNASTICS: U.S. Men and Women Wins Team Titles and 27 Medals at 2010 Pacific Rim Championships
The U.S. women kicked off their Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships with a gold and silver medal rush. The team handily won the team gold medal, and U.S. went one-two in both the junior and senior all-around competition at Hisense Arena in Melbourne, Australia. Rebecca Bross (Plano, Texas), and Jordyn Wieber (DeWitt, Mich.), won the senior and junior all around gold medals, respectively. In the team competition, the USA posted a total of 234.950, posting the highest team score on all four apparatus: vault, 60.750; uneven bars, 57.950; balance beam, 58.700; and floor exercise, 57.550. The team took home the gold, followed by China who took the silver, and Australia took the bronze. The U.S. women have won the team titles and claimed the top two spots in the junior and senior all-around at every Pacific Rim Championships from 2002-10. The women wrapped up the competition by winning a total of 12 individual event medals - five gold and seven silver. Bross and Wieber, each won two gold medals, with Kyla Ross (Aliso Viejo, Calif.), picking up the fifth. Bross won the senior balance beam and floor exercise crowns, along with the uneven bars silver. Wieber took top honors on the junior uneven bars and floor exercise, along with the vault silver. Ross won the junior vault title and finished second on both uneven bars and floor. Alexandra Raisman (Needham, Mass.), picked up the silver medal for the senior balance beam and floor, with Sabrina Vega (Carmel, N.Y.), claiming the junior balance beam silver.
On the men's side, the U.S. team won the team title. 2009 U.S. junior all- around champion John Orozco (Bronx, N.Y.), won the junior all-around title with a total that would have captured the senior crown. Scoring a team total of 345.950, the U.S. men earned the team title, finishing first on pommel horse (54.950), still rings (58.750), and parallel bars (58.850). China took second with a team score of 340.500 and first place finishes on floor exercise (57.700) and vault (63.900). Canada rounded out the top three with a 337.250. The U.S. men won 15 medals - six gold, four silver and five bronze - in the senior and junior individual event finals . The USA's gold medalists were Chris Cameron (Winter Haven, Fla.), Danell Leyva (Miami, Fla.), C.J. Maestas (Corrales, N.M.) and Orzoco. China had the second highest individual event medal total at nine. In the senior competition, Leyva won two gold medals (parallel bars and horizontal bar), along with the still rings bronze. Cameron captured the pommel horse title, along with the floor exercise silver. Steven Legendre (Flower Mound, Texas) was the floor bronze medalist.
LUGE: Five-Time Olympian Mark Grimmette Hired as Sports Program Director
Mark Grimmette, U.S. Delegation flag bearer for the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games, five-time Olympian, and two-time Olympic medalist, has been hired as the Sports Program Director for USA Luge. His primary job function will be to guide all aspects of the athletic programs for USA Luge, with the overall goal being the improvement of skills and performance of all the current pipeline of athletes, culminating in the winning of medals in all disciplines at every level, including the Olympic Games.
Grimmette, who raced with Brian Martin (Palo Alto, Calif.) for 16 years, retired from competitive racing in March following the Norton U.S. National Championships. His career in the sport began 25 years ago when construction began on his favorite sledding hill in Muskegon. Upon further investigation, he discovered a small luge track was being built. A budding handyman, he volunteered to help with the project and eventually got to try the sport firsthand once the track was completed. In the coming weeks, Grimmette will assemble the USA Luge coaching staff for the 2010-11 season.
SAILING: USSTAG's Team Tunnicliffe Wins Silver Medal in Hyres
US Sailing Team AlphaGraphics' Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.), Molly Vandemoer (Redwood City, Calif.) and Debbie Capozzi (Bayport, N.Y.) won a silver medal in the Women's Match Racing event at the 42nd French Sailing Week, after finishing 1-3 in the final series against Germany's Silke Hohlbrock. This was their second podium finish in the 2009-2010 International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Sailing World Cup series, after winning gold at US SAILING's 2010 Rolex Miami OCR in January.
CYCLING: Koerber Finishes Second in Houffalize
The second round of the 2010 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup saw an American woman grab the World Cup leader's jersey for the first time since Alison Dunlap in 2002. Willow Koerber (Durango, Colo.) earned the silver for the second time in as many weeks of World Cup action to earn the coveted leader's jersey. After finishing on the podium in last week's opening World Cup round American compatriot Georgia Gould (Fort Collins, Colo.) came in 14th.
PREVIEW - MAY 3-10
ARCHERY: The World Cup stage 1 will take place May 5-8 in Porec, Croatia. The top male and female U.S. archers will compete in recurve and compound events. Many new exciting features will appear during the season: the set system, the official mixed team event, the Hit/Miss scoring and the Longines Prize of Precision.
DIVING: Top divers from approximately 20 countries will be at the Fort Lauderdale Aquatic Complex May 6-9 for the annual AT&T USA Diving Grand Prix. Among the divers representing Team USA in the competition are seven members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team: David Boudia (Noblesville, Ind.), Kelci Bryant (Chatham, Ill.), Chris Colwill (Brandon, Fla.), Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.), Mary Beth Dunnichay (Elwood, Ind.), Thomas Finchum (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Haley Ishimatsu (Seal Beach, Calif.).
GYMNASTICS: The Men's Junior Olympic National Championships will take place May 4-9 in Knoxville, Tenn. The Women's competition will take place May 6-9 in Dallas, Texas. The top U.S. junior elite level 9 gymnasts will compete.
KARATE: The Pan-American Championships senior competition will take place May 8-13 in Quito, Ecuador. The top men's and women's U.S. athletes will compete for the top prize. Modern Pentathlon: The World Cup stage 4 will take place May 6-9 in Budapest, Hungary. Among the competitors are Will Brady who has led the U.S. in all three previous World Cup stops, including a season- best 19th place in the third round at Great Britain, and 2008 Olympian Margaux Isaksen who placed 24th in the women's competition at the last World Cup event.
VOLLEYBALL: The men's and women's NORECA beach volleyball circuit will continue in Port Spain, Trinidad from May 5-9. The China Open beach volleyball competition will also be going on fMay 5-8 in Shanghai, China.
WRESTLING: The Wrestling Pan-American Youth Olympic Games qualifier will take place in Monterrey, Mexico May 3-5. The top male and female U.S. wrestlers will compete in freestyle and Greco-roman events for a spot in the Pan-American Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore in August.
WATER POLO: The Men's FINA World League Preliminaries will take place in Los Alamitos, Calif. May 4-9. The USA Men's Senior National Team officially gets their 2010 summer competition season started a little early with a pivotal match against Canada on Monday, May 3.
