Rancho Mirage, CA (My Sportsbook) - Suzann Pettersen carded a five-under 67 Thursday to take a one-stroke lead over Lorena Ochoa after the first round of the Kraft Nabisco Championship, the first major of the season on the LPGA Tour.
Pettersen, a six-time winner on the LPGA Tour, owns one major championship title. That came at the 2007 McDonald's LPGA Championship, which was one of five wins that season for Pettersen.
Ochoa, the women's world No. 1, posted a four-under 68 and is alone in second place. She collected the second of her two major championships at this event in 2008.
Karrie Webb, a two-time champion, shot three-under 69 and was joined in a share of third place with 2004 Women's British Open champion Karen Stupples, Becky Brewerton, 2008 McDonald's LPGA Champion Yani Tseng, Vicky Hurst, Na On Min and Song-Hee Kim.
Defending champion Brittany Lincicome is tied for 10th at minus-two.
Pettersen played the back nine first on Thursday and opened with a birdie on the 10th. She rolled in back-to-back birdie efforts from the 14th on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club to move to three-under.
After three straight pars to close out her opening nine, Pettersen birdied the first. She cruised to seven consecutive pars from the second before converting a birdie effort on the ninth, her last, to secure the first-round lead
"It was a very good, solid round of golf," Pettersen said. "I could not ask for a better start. I felt better than I did (Wednesday), and had a few good bounces out there. But obviously I am feeling very good with my driver, which helps around this place, and making a few putts led to very stress-free golf today."
Ochoa connected on back-to-back birdie chances from the second to get her round going. She stumbled to a bogey on the fourth, but recovered that lost stroke with a birdie on the eighth.
The Mexican birdied the 10th, then got up and down for birdie on No. 11 to move within one of the lead at four-under.
Ochoa missed the green at the 15th and was unable to save par from over the green. She bounced right back with a birdie on 16, then parred the final two holes to finish one back.
"It was a good day for sure. It helped me with a good start. I made a really good par on the first hole and birdied the second hole to keep my momentum going," Ochoa explained. "I can only tell you that I think it's a great start. Secondly, taking advantage of the good conditions, the weather and having a good course for the afternoon, and tomorrow hopefully we'll go for a continuation."
Lincicome was joined in 10th place by Sakura Yokomine, Sophie Gustafson and Karine Icher.
Michelle Wie, last year's runner-up Cristie Kerr, 2007 champ Morgan Pressel, 1998 winner Pat Hurst and 2004 champion Grace Park are among nine players tied at minus-one.
NOTES: Jennifer Song, last year's U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links and U.S. Women's Amateur Champion, is the top amateur after one round at one-under 71...Two-time champion Juli Inkster struggled to a five-over 77...Former champions Helen Alfredsson and Amy Alcott both withdrew before the round started and were not replaced in the field.
