Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - PGA TOUR - WASTE MANAGEMENT PHOENIX OPEN, TPC Scottsdale, Scottsdale, Arizona - Normally played on Super Bowl weekend, the raucous Phoenix Open was pushed back a few weeks this year, but that won't slow the party.
The TPC Scottsdale is home to the loudest and largest crowd on the PGA Tour. The par-three 16th has become a spectacle of its own as bleachers now completely surround the hole to make a stadium-like par-three.
The 16th will have in the upwards of 20,000 fans a day on that hole alone, while the tournament regularly draws over 100,000 each day.
Last year, Kenny Perry tried to give away the title as he bogeyed the final hole of regulation to fall into a tie with Charley Hoffman and force a playoff.
On the third extra hole, Perry poured in a 23-foot birdie effort to claim his 13th PGA Tour title. He denied Hoffman his second PGA Tour win.
The playoff was not a thing of beauty as both Perry and Hoffman bogeyed the first extra hole. Both players had birdie chances inside 20 feet on the second playoff hole but could not covert. Perry finally won the title with a birdie on the 17th.
Perry will be joined in the field by 10 other former champions. Three of those nine former winners own seven titles dating to 1989.
Mark Calcavecchia is a three-time winner and owns at least a piece of all the scoring records. He blitzed the field in 2001 as he fired an 11-under 60 in round two en route to breaking the 36-, 54- and 72-hole scoring records.
Two-time winners J.B. Holmes and Phil Mickelson, who went to nearby Arizona State, are among 14 multiple champions in tournament history.
Golf Channel will have coverage of all four rounds starting at 4:00 p.m. (et).
The PGA Tour kicks off its Florida swing next week with the Honda Classic, where Y.E. Yang earned his first PGA Tour title last year.
LPGA TOUR
HSBC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS, Tanah Merah Country Club (Garden Course), Singapore - The LPGA Tour will play its second straight event in Asia this week with the HSBC Women's Champions.
Jiyai Shin kicked off a three-win 2009 season with a two-shot victory over Katherine Hull last year. Shin was one-over par after two rounds, but went 66-66 on the weekend to roar from behind for the win.
Hull, the third-round leader, was in control of the event until tallying a double-bogey and two bogeys on her back nine to fall out of the lead. The late struggles cost Hull her second tour title.
This will be just the third playing of this event. The limited field is comprised of the top 20 from the Rolex Women's World Rankings as of December 31st, 2009 winners on the LPGA Tour, two sponsor invites, one qualifier and the remainder of the field consists of leading players on the 2009 LPGA Tour money list not otherwise qualified.
Golf Channel will have tape-delayed coverage of all four rounds.
After a three-week break, the LPGA Tour will return to action in California with the Kia Classic Presented by J Golf, where Karrie Webb won last year.
NATIONWIDE TOUR
PANAMA CLARO CHAMPIONSHIP, Panama Golf Club, Panama City, Panama - The Nationwide Tour returns to action with its third of four events outside the United States to kick off the 2010 season.
Last year, this event was the first of the season for the Nationwide Tour and it needed a playoff to determine the winner. Vance Veazey carded four rounds in the 60s, but Garrett Willis closed with a four-under 66 to get in at minus- seven.
After Willis had gotten into clubhouse, Veazey birdied the 72nd hole to force the playoff. Veazey two-putted for par on the second extra hole to collect his fourth Nationwide Tour victory, including his second at this event. He also titled here in 2005.
Veazey is not on the field this week, but the winners of the season's first two events are. Robert Gates won the New Zealand Open, while Jim Herman claimed the Moonah Classic.
This week's field also includes former champions Miguel Carballo (2007) and Scott Dunlap (2008).
The Nationwide Tour heads to Colombia next week for a new event - the Pacific Rubiales Bogota Open.
