Orlando, FL (My Sportsbook) - The NCAA has found that the University of Central Florida's
football program committed major violations and levied a number of punishments, including two years of probation.
The violations include at least 209 impermissible telephone calls and about 100 text messages to 27 recruits or their parents over nearly 1 1/2 years. UCF reported the violations to the NCAA itself.
In addition to the self-imposed probation lasting from February 11, 2010 to February 10, 2012, the school also self-imposed recruiting restrictions, which were completed this season. Two former staff members were given two-week suspensions at their current institutions.
"We fully accept the NCAA's findings and penalties," said UCF athletics director Keith Tribble. "I demand NCAA compliance from our entire organization, and we have procedures in place to help prevent this in the future."
According to the NCAA release, between June 2007 and January 2009, two non- coaching football staff members placed the impermissible phone calls and sent the text messages to prospective student-athletes and/or their parents.
The release said the former staff members were the former recruiting administrator and former director of player personnel. According to NCAA rules, non-coaching staff members could not make or receive the phone calls or send the text messages for recruiting reasons. Some of the text messages were sent before the ban on text messages took place on August 1, 2007.
Additionally, some of the phone calls pushed the school over the NCAA limit for weekly call totals, and some of the recruits were contacted before their senior years of high school, which is not allowed according to NCAA rules.
"The violations that took place are extremely disappointing to me," said head coach George O'Leary. "We run a first-class program, and there is no place for this behavior at UCF. I want our fans to know that we acted immediately when we learned about what was going on and worked with the NCAA from the start."
