Columbus, OH (My Sportsbook) - Hambletonian winner Muscle Hill has been voted champion three-year-old male trotter of 2009 as announced by the U.S. Harness Writers Association (USHWA).
Dan Patch Awards in 12 divisions of harness racing were named by the USHWA. The awards will be presented to the owners of the sport's brightest stars on Sunday, February 28 at Yonkers Raceway in New York. At that time the Horse of the Year will be announced, along with Pacer and Trotter of the Year.
Muscle Hill, who is favored to be named Horse of the Year, was undefeated in 12 starts for 2009 and earned $2.45 million. Trained by Greg Peck and driven by Brian Sears, the trotter won the Kentucky Futurity, Canadian Trotting Classic and World Trotting Derby, along with the Hambletonian. Last year Muscle Hill was voted the top two-year-old male trotter.
Two years after being named champion three-year-old filly pacer, Southwind Tempo has been voted champion older pacing mare. The five-year-old won seven of 15 starts in 2009 for $901,475.
The 2009 champion older male pacer is Won The West. Winner of the Breeders Crown pace, Won The West earned $785,415 with six wins in 22 starts.
The champion older male trotter is Lucky Jim with Buck I St Pat repeating as the champion older trotting mare for 2009. Lucky Jim won 17 of 18 races for better than $1 million. Buck I St Pat earned $400,925 with nine wins in 17 starts.
Broadway Schooner has been named the champion three-year-old trotting filly. Also driven by Sears, Broadway Schooner won seven of 16 starts in 2009 for $869,341.
Yellow Diamond is the top three-year-old pacing filly for the year. She won 14 of 22 races for $1.3 million. The champion three-year-old male pacer is Well Said, winner of the North America Cup, Meadowlands Pace and Little Brown Jug. Well Said earned nearly $2 million in 2009 with 10 wins in 14 starts.
The champion two-year-old trotters for 2009 are Lucky Chucky as top colt and Poof She's Gone as the leading filly. Lucky Chucky won nine of 12 starts for $667,792 and Poof She's Gone earned more than $1 million with 10 wins in 12 starts.
Taking home Dan Patch Awards as champion two-year-old pacers are the colt Sportswriter and the filly Fancy Filly. Sportswriter won seven of eight starts in 2009 for $815,680 and Fancy Filly brought home $817,655 with 10 victories in 12 races.
