Athens, Greece (My Sportsbook) - Diana Taurasi led a balanced American attack with 19 points, as the U.S. women's
basketball team finished preliminary round play with a dominating 100-62 victory over China.
The U.S. (5-0) finished atop Group B and will play Greece in the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Lisa Leslie totaled 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field, while Yolanda Griffith had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Sheryl Swoopes had 13 points for the two-time defending gold medalists, who ran their winning streak to 39 games in Olympic and World Championship contests.
Ye Li had 19 points to lead China (1-4), which was left out of the quarterfinals.
An early 11-2 run put the Americans in front 11-5 with Swoopes capping the burst with a three-pointer. The U.S. was ahead 27-13 after the opening quarter and it was a laugher the rest of the way.
Elsewhere on Sunday, Greek fans had a chance to celebrate following their country's 93-91 triumph over Japan. Ryoko Yano missed a potential game-winning three-pointer at the buzzer, sending Greece (2-3) into the next round as the last quarterfinalist.
Anastasia Kostaki had 12 points, including two key free throws with 6.7 seconds left that made it 93-90. Greece fouled with 4.6 seconds to go to prevent Japan from a three-point shot. Kaori Kusuda made the first free throw and missed the second on purpose. The ball went out of bounds to Japan, but Yano's three-point shot bounced off the rim as the buzzer went off.
Yano had 28 points on 8-of-12 shooting from beyond the arc for Japan (1-4), while Evanthia Maltsi had 33 points and 11 rebounds for Greece in the Group A game.
In another Group A contest, Russia (4-1) destroyed Nigeria (0-5), 93-58. Oxana Rakhmatulina led five Russians in double figures with 15 points, while Mfon Udoka scored 19 for Nigeria.
In Group B action, two teams already in the quarterfinals squared off with the Czech Republic (3-2) upending New Zealand (2-3), 74-57. Hana Machova had 21 points for the Czechs, while Gina Farmer scored 19 and Angela Marino had 18 points for New Zealand.
Australia (5-0) finished undefeated atop Group A following its 84-66 thrashing of Brazil (3-2). WNBA standout Lauren Jackson scored 24 points for the Australia, while Helen Cristina Luz had 16 to pace Brazil.
