Daytona Beach, FL (My Sportsbook) - Jane Chin fired a seven-under 65 to tie Nikki Garrett for the lead Thursday after two rounds of the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament.
Garrett, the first-round leader, had a 71 and joined Chin at six-under 138.
Katie Kempter (69) was third at five-under 139 and Nicole Jeray (70) was fourth at four-under 140.
The event, which lasts five rounds, determines LPGA Tour eligibility for next season among those players not already exempt.
Chin, a 23-year-old Californian, just finished her rookie season on the Duramed Futures Tour, a developmental circuit for the LPGA.
"I just wanted to keep hitting fairways and greens because yesterday I started struggling a bit," said Chin. "I did that today. I hit more greens."
Garrett is a 25-year-old Australian with two career wins on Ladies European Tour.
"I probably didn't sink as many (putts as yesterday), but I didn't really leave myself very many testers," said Garrett. "I got a couple of really good up-and-downs."
The 105 players in this week's field are battling for LPGA Tour status next season under new a Q-school system that rewards the top-40 finishers with some measure of eligibility for 2010.
The top-20 players at the end of the tournament will alternate with players who finished in positions 81-100 on this year's money list for entry into tournaments.
The Q-school winner will earn her spot in a field, followed by the player who finished 81st on the money list, followed by the second-place finisher at Q- school, followed by the 82nd player on the money, and so on.
Players who finish in positions 21-40 this week will earn lesser consideration.
