Athens, Greece (My Sportsbook) - The United States softball team continued to roll at the Olympics, posting a 4-0 victory over China on Tuesday.
Lori Harrigan tossed a one-hitter, striking out eight, and Crystl Bustos homered to lead the U.S. to its 14th shutout in 23 Olympic games all-time. It marked the 74th straight victory for the national team, dating back to last summer. The Americans (4-0), the two-time defending gold medalists, have posted four shutouts in this year's Summer Games, giving up just six hits.
It was a good bounce-back performance for Harrigan, who struggled in the first game, a 7-0 victory over Italy on Saturday. Harrigan allowed three hits and a walk in only 1 1/3 innings in that contest, but on Tuesday she didn't walk a batter and was in complete control.
"I was actually coming out focusing on just being relaxed because my first appearance against Italy was a little shaky," Harrigan said.
The U.S. got two runs in the first inning, helped by an error by shortstop Wei Qiang. She could not handle a sharp grounder hit by Natasha Watley, who would later score on a single by Lovieanne Jung. Lisa Fernandez, who had walked, also scored on the play.
Leah Amico had an RBI double in the second inning and Bustos drilled a homer over the fence in left field to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
"You can see that our offense has been awesome," Bustos said. "We are all hitting. The offense is really good so you cannot ask for anything more."
China (2-2) had beaten Canada on Monday,
The next game for Team USA is against the Canadians on Wednesday.
