(My Sportsbook) - Lefty Scott Kazmir will try to return to early April form tonight when the Tampa Bay Rays host the
Baltimore Orioles in the opening test of a brief two-game series at Tropicana Field.
Kazmir, who won 12 games for the American League champions last season, opened 2009 with consecutive defeats of Boston and the New York Yankees but has since gone mildly cold, losing two of three.
He was raked for nine hits and six earned runs in his last outing, on April 29 at Minnesota, in an 8-3 Tampa Bay loss.
Overall, in 28 2/3 innings, he's surrendered 27 hits and 16 earned runs.
Against Baltimore last season, Kazmir got a no-decision in his only start after permitting three hits in 5 1/3 scoreless innings.
For the Orioles, right-hander Adam Eaton continues an unsteady run as No. 5 starter.
He dropped his opening two starts of 2009 against the Rays and Red Sox while allowing 17 hits and 10 runs in eight innings, but has been somewhat better since - giving up 12 hits and seven runs in 13 1/3 innings against the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
In the meeting with the Rays on April 12, Eaton walked two and struck out six in four innings, but was touched for eight hits and four earned runs.
Prior to that start he'd not faced Tampa Bay since 2006, when he lost one start while being touched for 11 hits and four runs in five innings as a member of the Texas Rangers.
On Sunday in Toronto, Alex Rios' solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the difference, as the Blue Jays used clutch two-out hitting to defeat the Orioles, 4-3, and complete a three- game sweep at Rogers Centre.
Luke Scott blasted a two-run homer for the Orioles, who have lost six in a row and eight of nine overall. Jeremy Guthrie (2-2) gave up four runs on six hits over eight innings to take the loss.
In St. Petersburg, Carl Crawford went 4-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and tied a modern day major league record with six stolen bases, as the Rays edged the Boston Red Sox, 5-3, taking three of the four games in the series.
Crawford joined Eddie Collins, Otis Nixon and Eric Young, who also had six steals in a game. The Rays set a franchise record with eight stolen bases in the win.
Jason Bartlett finished with three hits and an RBI, while Carlos Pena added a run-scoring double for the Rays, who split their last six overall.
James Shields (3-2) grabbed the win after pitching 7 1/3 innings. The right- hander allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking two. Troy Percival earned his third save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Baltimore took two of three from the Rays earlier this season after Tampa Bay went 15-3 against the O's a year ago. The Rays were also 8-1 at home against Baltimore in 2008.
