(My Sportsbook) - Tonight's NBA action kicks off with a preview of the Eastern Conference's four-five playoff matchup when the
Miami Heat visit the
Atlanta Hawks at Philips Arena.
The fourth-seeded Hawks will face No. 5 Miami in a best-of-seven series when the postseason gets underway this weekend.
The Hawks secured the fourth spot in the East and won their third straight game on Friday when Josh Smith scored a team-high 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Atlanta claimed a 122-118 victory over the Indiana Pacers at Philips Arena.
Joe Johnson finished with 24 points, while Al Horford went for 22 points and 15 boards for Atlanta, which was coming off a 113-105 road victory over the Bucks on Wednesday. The Hawks have won three straight after losing the previous three contests and got the fourth spot and home-court advantage for the first round of the playoffs after Boston defeated Miami on Friday.
"Words cannot describe how I feel," Smith said. "Personally for me when I came into the league, we won 13 games and now being able to clinch the fourth spot is special."
Mike Bibby donated 15 points and nine assists, and Flip Murray had 15 points in the win.
Forward Marvin Williams, who returned to the lineup after missing the last 16 games with a back injury, finished with five points and one assist in 11:55 of game action.
The Hawks were without guard Acie Law (back spasms) and forward Maurice Evans (death in his family). Zaza Pachulia also left in the second quarter with a back injury and did not return. Evans is expected to be back in the lineup tonight while Law remains doubtful and Pachulia will be a game-time decision.
The Heat, meanwhile, cliched the fifth-seed on Sunday thanks to Dwyane Wade's career-high 55 points that helped Miami crush the Knicks, 122-105.
Wade was just one-point shy of Glen Rice's franchise record of 56 points in one game, set on April 15, 1995 against Orlando. Wade's effort, though, was an AmericanAirlines Arena record.
"I wasn't aware of it and I didn't care for it," said Wade of the record. "This was about clinching a (fifth seed) playoff berth tonight."
Wade also hit a career-high six three-pointers (6-for-12) for the Heat, who snapped a two-game slide. Rookie Michael Beasley tied a career-high with 28 points and set a career mark with 16 rebounds. Mario Chalmers donated 15 points and nine assists in the win.
Jermaine O'Neal, who left in the second quarter with a strained calf, had four points and as many boards in 13:20 of action. O'Neal is expected to remain on the sidelines tonight with fellow big man Udonis Haslem (thumb). Forward Jamario Moon (groin) is doubtful while Wade (ankle) may also be rested by Heat coach Erik Spoelstra.
The Hawks have taken two of their three matchups with the Heat this season, including a 91-83 triumph in Atlanta on February 27. The Hawks are 30-10 at Philips Arena this season, the best home mark since finishing 36-5 in 1996-97
The Hawks will finish the regular season at Memphis on Wednesday, while the Heat close at home against Detroit.
