(My Sportsbook) - Continuing their quest for a postseason spot, the
St. Louis Blues will try for their first-ever season series sweep of the
Dallas Stars in tonight's battle at American Airlines Center.
After having a timely five-game winning streak halted by Chicago on Wednesday, the Blues got right back into the win column on Thursday with a big 5-4 victory over Detroit.
The victory moved the Blues into the eighth spot in the Western Conference with 85 points. However, Nashville, which is hosting Columbus tonight, is just one point behind St. Louis for the conference's final postseason berth.
David Backes lifted the Blues to the win over the Red Wings, posting the first hat trick of his career as part of a personal-best four-goal night. His game- winner with 4:07 to play was his 30th tally of the season, the first time Backes has reached that mark in his three-year career.
Andy McDonald had a goal and an assist while Chris Mason made 34 saves for the Blues, who lost Patrik Berglund to a lower-body injury in the second period that has him questionable for this game. Berglund has 21 goals and 47 points on the season.
St. Louis is 16-18-4 on the road this season and will end a five-game road trip in Phoenix on Tuesday.
The Blues have outscored the Stars 14-4 in winning all three matchups so far this season, giving them a victory in seven of the last 10 games of the series. St. Louis also snapped a two-game skid in Dallas with a win on February 26.
Though the Blues have never swept a season series with the Stars, they did go 1-0 with a pair of ties against them in 2000-01.
Poor play down the stretch has all but officially eliminated Dallas from postseason contention. Seven points out of a playoff spot with four games to go, the Stars have lost eight of their last nine and will likely see their string of five straight postseason appearances end just one year removed from a Western Conference finals appearance.
In Thursday's 2-1 loss to Calgary, Fabian Brunnstrom tallied the lone Dallas goal and Marty Turco made 22 saves.
The Stars played most of this season without Brenden Morrow and Sergei Zubov and lost Brad Richards twice to injury.
Tonight marks Dallas' final home game of the regular season and it is 19-16-5 at home thanks to a current four-game slide as the host.
