(My Sportsbook) - Though the Penguins lost for the first time in regulation in over a month last time out, the setback was a costly one. Pittsburgh will try to get right back into the win column tonight in a home test with the
Calgary Flames at Mellon Arena.
The Penguins carried a 12-game point streak (10-0-2) into Sunday's matchup with Philadelphia, a run that began with seven straight victories and helped vault the club into a tie for fourth in the Eastern Conference standings with the Flyers.
However, a 3-1 loss to the Flyers over the weekend now has Pittsburgh tied for sixth overall in the East with 86 points, one point back of fifth-seeded Carolina. The Flyers and their 90 points are fourth.
Kris Letang netted the lone goal for Pittsburgh, which had a three-game win streak stopped and fell to 3-1-1 on an eight-game homestand. The Pens suffered their first regulation loss since February 22 and first at home in 60 minutes since February 8, as they had been 7-0-1 at Mellon Arena since that defeat. Pittsburgh is 21-13-3 at home this season.
Evgeni Malkin notched an assist to up his NHL-leading totals in assists (72) and points (105). Sidney Crosby trails only Malkin in helpers with 67 and the Penguins captain has notched a point in each of Pittsburgh's last nine games. Crosby has also posted at least a point in each of his last 13 games played (7 goals, 16 assists), a run that is split by a groin injury.
Pittsburgh, the defending Eastern Conference champions, will host the Flames one game after Calgary knocked off reigning Stanley Cup champion Detroit, 5-3, on Monday.
Mike Cammalleri continued his standout season, posting a goal and two assists. He is just four goals shy of his first-career 40-goal season and five points shy of the personal best 80 he registered in 2006-07 with Los Angeles.
Cammalleri is teaming with leading scorer Jarome Iginla (83 points) and the recently acquired Olli Jokinen (8 goals and 12 points in nine games with the Flames) to lead a charging Calgary offense that has scored 21 goals over the past five games.
Craig Conroy and Jamie Lundmark each had a goal versus the Red Wings for the Flames, who had dropped five of seven coming into the game. Miikka Kiprusoff made 30 saves in the win, his league-leading 42nd of the season.
Calgary, the third seed in the West, holds a three-point edge over Vancouver for first place in the Northwest Division. The Flames have lost four of their last five on the road, where they are 18-15-2 this season.
They were also winless in their last 12 trips to Pittsburgh (0-10 with two ties) before a 3-2 victory at Mellon Arena on December 3, 2006.
