Zajac carries Devils over Kings

Los Angeles, CA (My Sportsbook) - Travis Zajac ended with a goal and two assists, as the New Jersey Devils blasted the Los Angeles Kings, 5-1.

Jamie Langenbrunner, Patrik Elias and Zach Parise each had a goal an assist for the Devils, who snapped a two-game slide. Brian Rolston also scored, while Kevin Weekes made 34 saves in the win.

"We moved the puck well, and we had guys around the net and went to the net. That was the difference," Devils head coach Brent Sutter said. "The last two games we've gotten away from that but we were assertive tonight. And our power plays got some key goals for us. Our focus was good tonight, and we were prepared to play tonight."

Derek Armstrong had the lone goal for the Kings, who were coming off a win Thursday over Anaheim. Jonathan Quick gave up all five goals on 28 shots in the loss for LA.

"They are a tough team to beat," Kings center Brian Boyle said. "They've done it for a number of years now where they just wait for you to make a mistake and they're very defensive minded; but then again you look at their forwards and they play hard. So once you make a mistake they have some weapons to put it in the back of the net."

Three of New Jersey's goals came via the power play, including the first two. Zajac put the Devils on the board with 5:58 left in the first period, and just 1:07 into the second, Elias made it a 2-0 contest.

Parise followed up Elias' goal just 1:11 later with his own score, and New Jersey carried a 3-0 lead into the third period.

Armstrong got LA back within two goals at the 1:17 point of the final stanza, but the Devils got the tally back with a power-play score from Rolston a little more than five minutes later.

Langenbrunner's marker came almost 11 minutes into the third, and the Devils easily held on for the win from there.

Game Notes

New Jersey went 3-for-7 on power plays, while LA went 0-for-4...The Devils announced Saturday that Brendan Shanahan will return to the NHL for a 22nd season, with the club for whom he began his lengthy career. Although there is no official contract, Shanahan has agreed in principle to skate for New Jersey, and the formal deal will be worked out in the next few days. Shanahan, who will turn 40 on January 23, was the Devils' second overall pick in the 1987 draft, though he played just four years with NJ. He leads all active NHL players in goals scored with 650, and captured three Stanley Cup titles while with the Red Wings in 1997, 1998 and 2002...It was Parise's 100th career goal.
