East Rutherford, NJ (My Sportsbook) - The
New York Giants signed Herman Moore on Wednesday, one day after the wide receiver agreed to a contract. Terms were not disclosed. The Giants also announced that they have signed wide receiver Tony Simmons and placed wide receiver Tim Carter and offensive lineman Dusty Zeigler on injured reserve.
Moore, who is the Detroit Lions all-time leading receiver, hasn't played since being placed on injured reserve last season with a hip injury.
The 10th pick overall in the 1991 draft out of Virginia, Moore caught 670 passes for 9,174 yards and 62 touchdowns in 11 seasons with the Lions. Moore also holds an NFL-record with 123 receptions in 1995.
In 2001, Moore played in three games with one start, and caught four passes for 76 yards. He suffered a torn hip muscle and the Lions placed him on injured reserve. Moore was released by Detroit on June 3, 2002.
Moore caught more than 100 passes every season from 1995 to 1997 joining Jerry Rice as the only players in history to cross the century mark in three consecutive years. Moore set a career-high with 14 receptions against Chicago on December 4, 1995. He has 34 career 100-yard games and has played in the Pro Bowl every season from 1994 to 1997.
Simmons started nine of 38 games for the Patriots over three seasons, catching 56 passes for 981 yards. He also caught 32 passes for Barcelona in the NFL Europe League in 2001. Simmons was released by New England on September 2, 2001 and was signed the next day by Cleveland. He played one game for the Browns before being released on October 2. Simmons was signed by the Colts on October 8. The Colts released him a month later and re-signed him on November 21. He caught two passes for 17 yards in six games with Indianapolis.
After becoming an unrestricted free agent, Simmons was signed by the expansion Houston Texans on March 26, 2002. He caught four passes for 35 yards in the Hall of Fame Game against the Giants before getting released him on September 1.
Zeigler, a seven-year veteran, played in two games this season. The Giants starting center in 2000 and 2001, he missed all of training camp, the preseason and the first five games of the regular season while recovering from microfracture surgery on his right knee. After playing against the Eagles on October 28, Zeigler experienced pain and swelling in the knee. He was deactivated for the victories over Jacksonville and Minnesota.
Carter finished his season with two catches for 37 yards, three rushing attempts for 28 yards, and five kickoff returns for 78 yards.
New York needed the help at the wide receiver position due to injuries. In addition to Carter, the Giants have lost Ike Hilliard for the season with a dislocated shoulder and Ron Dixon for perhaps two weeks with a sprained knee.
The Giants also signed wide receiver Derek Dorris to the practice squad and released defensive end Nick Myers from the practice squad on Wednesday.
