Denver, CO (My Sportsbook) - Marcus Camby had a triple-double by the end of the third quarter, and the
Denver Nuggets set a franchise-record for most points in a regulation game with a 168-116 victory over the Seattle SuperSonics.
Camby ended with 13 points, 15 rebounds and a career-high 10 assists for the Nuggets, who have won three in a row to pull within 1 1/2 games of Golden State for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Carmelo Anthony had 26 points, as the Nuggets posted eight players in double figures. Allen Iverson scored 24 and had six assists before leaving with a welt over his left eye. Kenyon Martin tallied 23 points, while J.R. Smith and Chucky Atkins each scored 19.
"It was guys making shots," Martin said. "Forty-four assists, it's hard to beat a team when they have that many assists. To score 168 points at this level is unheard of, and 84 points in both halves is just crazy."
Denver broke its mark for most points in regulation, eclipsing the 163 against San Antonio on January 11, 1984. Smith's emphatic slam over 6-foot-11 Mouhamed Sene with 44.7 seconds left gave the Nuggets the record. Their all-time mark for points is 184 in a triple-overtime game against Detroit on December 13, 1983.
Incredibly, Denver's point total after three quarters was more than the Sonics had all game. The Nuggets shot 60.4 percent from the field and tied a franchise-record for most three-pointers in a game, going 16-of-31 from beyond the arc. It was also the largest margin of victory in team history, topping the 46 (139-93) versus the Clippers on November 6, 1987.
"There's no way you can't be happy with our offense tonight," Nuggets coach George Karl said. "The key to it was passing. When we pass the ball, when we play defense, and when we play with intensity, we can play with anybody in the league."
The Nuggets had the fourth-most points in a regulation game in NBA history, with 173 being tops by Boston and Phoenix.
Kevin Durant had 23 points for Seattle, which has lost eight in a row. Chris Wilcox added 17 points and 12 rebounds in defeat.
"We've got to work harder and have to get back to competing," Sonics coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "When you get beat that badly, there is no excuse."
It was another dominating performance for the Nuggets against the Sonics. On February 27 in Seattle, the Nuggets shot 67 percent in a 138-96 win.
Denver had 48 points in the first quarter, two shy of the NBA record for that period, and the Nuggets were in front by 19 going into the second. Camby's jumper moved the Nuggets to a 22-11 lead halfway through the period, and the Nuggets continued to rattle Seattle's porous defense, building a 20-point lead with nearly two minutes remaining in the stanza.
Atkins had a chance to give the Nuggets the record, but he missed a three- pointer at the end of the quarter.
It only got worse for the Sonics in the second. Anthony Carter's three-pointer near the end of the period gave Denver 84 points and the Nuggets went into the half with a 26-point lead.
Iverson went out of the game with nearly three minutes left in the third, but the Nuggets were already ahead 116-74. Iverson, who took an elbow to the side of the head, was later seen with swelling above his left eye.
It was 127-85 going into the fourth before the Nuggets put the finishing touches on their record night in the final minute.
