New Orleans, LA (My Sportsbook) - Cleveland's Daniel Gibson scored 33 points -- setting a new record with 11 three-point shots -- as the sophomores beat the rookies, 136-109, in the All-Star Rookie Challenge Friday night.
Gibson ended 11-of-20 from beyond the arc and garnered MVP honors, as the sophomores topped the rookies for the sixth consecutive year. Gibson will compete in the three-point shootout on Saturday as part of the ongoing All- Star festivities.
"It was unbelievable. It was special," Gibson said of his performance. "I never imagined, never dreamed that I would come out and shoot the ball as well as I did in an environment and atmosphere like that. So right now I don't really know what to say. I'm just excited and I'm happy I got the opportunity."
Memphis' Rudy Gay added 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting, while Portland's LaMarcus Aldridge ended with 18 points and nine rebounds. Teammate Brandon Roy put up 17 points and seven assists, but Lakers guard Jordan Farmer topped that performance, as he ended with 17 points and doled out 12 assists in the victory.
The sophomores shot 57 percent (53-of-93) to win going away.
Seattle SuperSonics guard Kevin Durant, the second overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft, posted a team-high 23 points and eight rebounds for the rookies. Atlanta's Al Horford scored 19 points, while New Jersey's Sean Williams had a double-double, with 17 points and 10 boards.
"I wish I could tell you, then we would have won the game," said Durant, when asked why the rookies always tend to lose. "But I don't know. This is a time when you just have fun, enjoy everybody's company and play hard. You know, play together. It always helps the sophomore team when a guy hits 11 threes. That's hard to guard. But I think everybody had fun."
The rookies held a slim lead late in the first half, but Gibson and the sophomores stormed back. He drilled consecutive threes to put the sophomores on top, then added three more from long distance later on as the lead surged to 55-44.
It was 66-52 at the break, and Gibson was 7-of-12 behind the arc in the first half, tying the single-game record set by Kyle Korver in 2005.
The rookies never made it close in the second half, but ended with a 56.5 shooting percentage (48-of-85).
The participants in the game were selected by the NBA's assistant coaches, with each team submitting one ballot. The head coaches for the rookie and sophomore teams were led by the assistants from the 2007 NBA All-Star Game coaching staffs.
The matchup was a prelude to the NBA All-Star Game, scheduled to take place Sunday at New Orleans Arena.
