San Antonio, TX (My Sportsbook) - The
San Antonio Spurs play their first regular-season game at their new arena, the SBC Center, as they host the
Toronto Raptors.
The Spurs open the SBC Center after spending the last nine seasons playing in the spacious Alamodome. San Antonio opened play in the Alamodome on November 5, 1993 with a victory over the Golden State Warriors. Prior to that, the Spurs played their NBA home games at Hemisfair Arena.
San Antonio is coming off its first loss of the season, a 106-98 setback to Golden State. The Spurs had won the previous 16 meetings with the Warriors.
San Antonio was led by Tim Duncan, who drained 24 points and snagged nine boards. Stephen Jackson hit 4-of-5 from beyond the arc and finished with 12 points, but the Spurs were unable to beat a less talented Golden State squad after opening the season with an 87-82 win over the three-time defending champion Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.
David Robinson chipped in 15 rebounds and 12 points while Malik Rose contributed 12 points. Tony Parker and Emanuel Ginobili rounded out the Spurs' double-digit scorers with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
The Raptors were victorious in their season-opener Wednesday, as Morris Peterson scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Toronto past the Washington Wizards, 74-68, at Air Canada Centre.
Vince Carter added 18 points, Antonio Davis pulled down 16 boards and Jelani McCoy had 12 rebounds for the Raptors. Toronto had dropped its previous three season-openers.
The Spurs and Raptors split their two meetings last season, with the home team winning each contest. San Antonio has won three of the last five matchups overall, but owns just a 4-3 home mark against Toronto all-time.
Toronto owns just a 2-5 record in road-openers in its brief history.
