Auburn Hills, MI (My Sportsbook) - The
Detroit Pistons aim to remain unbeaten on the young season when they welcome the
Memphis Grizzlies to The Palace at Auburn Hills Friday.
Detroit posted an 86-77 win over the New York Knicks in its season-opener Wednesday, as Richard Hamilton had 22 points and six rebounds in his Pistons' debut. Chauncey Billups had 16 points for the Pistons.
Hamilton was acquired from Washington in the offseason along with Hubert Davis and Bobby Simmons in exchange for Jerry Stackhouse, Brian Cardinal and Ratko Varda.
Chucky Atkins scored all 12 of his points in the fourth quarter for Detroit, which outscored the Knicks 26-12 in the final period. Ben Wallace, the 2001-02 Defensive Player of the Year, had a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Grizzlies were not as fortunate in their first game of the 2002-03 season, falling to Dallas at home, 119-108.
Gordan Giricek, a rookie from Croatia who was originally selected by the Mavericks in the second round of the 1999 NBA Draft, came off the Memphis bench to lead all scorers with a surprising 29 points. Giricek made 10-of-13 shots, including four of the Grizzlies' five three-pointers.
Pau Gasol, the 2001-02 Rookie of the Year, also played very well, scoring 27 points on 10-of-12 shooting and adding a team-high 10 rebounds. Drew Gooden scored 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting in his first NBA game, but the Grizzlies did not have anyone else in double figures.
Memphis forward Stromile Swift missed Wednesday's game with the flu and is questionable for Friday's affair.
Detroit won both meetings with the Grizzlies last season and has taken five of the last six matchups overall. Memphis has dropped its last three at Detroit and five of its previous six.
