New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - The New York Rangers have called a news conference for 3 p.m. (et.) Thursday, at which time goaltender Mike Richter is expected to announce his retirement. Richter, who will turn 37 years old later this month, played in just 13 games last season because of a concussion he sustained November 5, 2002 against Edmonton. The concussion problems came after he had missed the final nine games of the 2001-02 campaign with a fractured skull. Richter spent his entire pro career in the Ranger organization, making his NHL debut in the 1989 playoffs. He has a career record of 301-258-73 with a 2.89 goals-against average in 666 regular-season games. The Flourtown, Pennsylvania native backstopped the Rangers to the Stanley Cup title in 1994 and was a three-time U.S. Olympian. He helped the Americans win the silver medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games. In 76 career playoff games, Richter has posted a record of 41-33 with a 2.07 GAA.
