Sacramento, CA (My Sportsbook) - Two teams trying to start the season 2-0 square off tonight, when the Portland Trail Blazers take on the
Sacramento Kings at ARCO Arena.
Portland is coming off a laugher. The Trail Blazers took advantage of a wounded Los Angeles Lakers' team and posted a 102-90 victory at the Rose Garden. Los Angeles was already playing without Shaquille O'Neal and Rick Fox, but when Kobe Bryant landed on Ruben Patterson's foot and twisted his ankle, that was more than Phil Jackson's troops could overcome.
With Bryant out of the game, the Blazers turned a three-point deficit into a seven-point lead. Bryant returned to the game, but Portland was able to ride the momentum all the way to the end.
"Before Kobe's injury, we were playing the way we should play and can play," Lakers coach Phil Jackson said. "That shouldn't have affected us to that level, but it did."
Rasheed Wallace led the way with 28 points and six rebounds for Portland. Damon Stoudamire added 16 points, six assists and six rebounds to the winning effort. Antonio Daniels chipped in 10 points over 20 minutes of work.
The Sacramento Kings were never challenged in their 94-67 season-opening victory on Tuesday night. Peja Stojakovic scored 17 points and Chris Webber had 14 rebounds.
Gerald Wallace scored 15 points and Damon Jones had 18 in his debut for the defending Pacific Division champions. The Kings hung there division championship banner, the first banner for team success ever hung at ARCO Arena.
The Kings were not crisp, but Cleveland's 24 turnovers and 32 percent shooting ensured they would cruise regardless. Sacramento held the Cavs to the lowest score by an opponent since the Kings moved to Northern California in 1985.
"It sure didn't feel like a record," said Webber, who scored just nine points on 4-of-13 shooting from the floor. "I'm just glad we got an ugly game out of the way. We wouldn't be ready for the playoffs if they started today. We need the whole 82-game season to find out where we are."
Kings coach Rick Adelman was not thrilled with his team's effort, despite the result.
"After the first half, I thought we did all right," Adelman said. "I don't know what was going on in the first quarter. Both teams looked like they'd never played before."
The Cavs continued to look like NBA neophytes in the second half.
The Blazers and Kings split four meetings last season with the home team winning every game. Portland has won two straight after dropping the previous three meetings. The Kings have won 11 of their last 16 home games in the series, but trail the all-time matchup 95-55.
