Atlanta, GA (My Sportsbook) - The Atlanta Hawks announced Monday that Terry Stotts and Billy Knight will remain with the team and be promoted to coach and general manager, respectively. Stotts took over the head coaching duties 27 games into last season when Atlanta fired Lon Kruger. Under Stotts, the Hawks went 24-31 and finished the season at 35-47. Knight was promoted from director of basketball operations to interim general manager when Pete Babcock was fired in April. "We are very excited about the opportunities ahead of us with the promotions of Billy and Terry to the GM and head coaching positions," said president Stan Kasten. "They both bring solid credentials to the job and have done tremendous work under difficult circumstances. Billy and Terry are well respected by their peers in the NBA, and I'm confident of their abilities to lead this franchise to great heights in the future." A longtime NBA assistant, Stotts joined the Hawks' staff last summer after a 14-year association with former Milwaukee coach George Karl. Stotts filled in as the Bucks' interim head coach on two occasions during the 2001-02 season when Karl had to leave the team due to the death of his father. The 45-year-old Stotts was a second-round draft choice of the Houston Rockets in the 1980 NBA Draft, but elected to play overseas before finishing his career with the Continental Basketball Association's Montana Golden Nuggets. When Karl was named head coach of the 1990-91 Albany Patroons, Stotts chose to pursue a new career as Karl's assistant. Stotts stayed in the CBA when Karl departed after one season to coach in Spain, accepting an assistant's position with the Fort Wayne Fury. He reunited with his old mentor one year later when Karl became head coach of the Seattle SuperSonics. The 51-year-old Knight has previous experience as a general manager during his two-year stint with the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies. He will continue to oversee the day-to-day operations of the basketball program and be responsible for all player personnel decisions.
