New York, NY (My Sportsbook) -
New Jersey Nets forward Kenyon Martin has asked to be traded after failing to come to terms on a contract extension, according to a published report.
The New York Daily News reported Saturday that Martin took offense to the Nets' offer of an estimated $65 million to $70 million over six years. That is far from the $85 million to $90 million Martin is reportedly seeking. According to the newspaper, Martin's agent, Brian Dyke, asked Nets president Rod Thorn for a trade earlier this week.
Meanwhile, The Oregonian reported Saturday that the Portland Trail Blazers may be willing to accommodate Martin's request. According to that newspaper, the Blazers are mulling over a deal that would send forward Rasheed Wallace and either Ruben Patterson or Arvydas Sabonis to the Nets for Martin and center Dikembe Mutombo.
"There have been some discussions, but there is not a trade on the table at this moment," Blazers head coach Maurice Cheeks told The Oregonian.
Portland general manager John Nash, who served in the same role with the Nets from 1996-2001, is reportedly hesitant to make the trade because he does not want to take on Mutombo's salary, which would be $17.9 million for the upcoming season and $19.7 million the following year.
Martin averaged 16.7 points and 8.3 rebounds last season. He raised that production to 18.9 points and 9.4 rebounds in the playoffs, but scored a combined 10 points on 5-for-31 shooting in Games 5 and 6 of the NBA Finals against the San Antonio Spurs.
The 7-foot-2 Mutombo averaged 5.8 points and 6.4 rebounds last season, but the 37-year-old veteran was limited to 24 games because of injury.
The Daily News reports Thorn would rather keep Martin, but are unable to meet his demands at this time because the team already has committed $130 million to Jason Kidd, Alonzo Mourning and Lucious Harris this summer.
Since Martin will be a restricted free agent following the 2003-04 campaign, the Nets will get the chance to match any offer he receives. Other teams will only be able to give Martin a maximum contract similar to the six-year, $82 million offer Elton Brand received from the Miami Heat that was matched by the Los Angeles Clippers.
According to the Daily News, the Nets may be holding off on paying Martin now in order to leave their options open with 6-11 Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Garnett becoming a free agent next summer.
Wallace, who averaged 18.1 points and 7.4 rebounds last season, is entering the final year of his contract. However, his career has been plagued by problems both on and off the court.
The 6-11 forward set a record with 41 technical fouls in 2000-01 and has served 11 games worth of suspensions the past three seasons for a variety of offenses. Wallace also was cited for possession of marijuana last season.
The 38-year-old Sabonis has two years left on his contract, but his deal is not guaranteed until August 15. A team could waive the 7-3 center before then to save money. Sabonis played in 78 games last season, averaging 6.1 points and 4.3 rebounds.
Patterson, 28, is a 6-5 guard-forward who averaged 8.3 points and 3.4 rebounds in 78 games played during the 2002-03 campaign.
