(My Sportsbook) - The Seattle SuperSonics head into the 2003 NBA Draft with a pair of selections in the top 14. Rick Sund is armed with the ammunition to make a trade or find a potential replacement for All-Star point guard Gary Payton.
Seattle is in a good position to get a solid, young point guard with one of its two first-round selections. The club has eyes for T.J. Ford (Texas), Kirk Hinrich (Kansas) and Luke Ridnour (Oregon). Ford is the least likely candidate to be around when the Sonics jump on the clock at No. 12. The Texas product is a lightning-fast guard with great ballhandling skills and court vision. He could go as high as fourth overall.
Hinrich and Ridnour are more realistic targets. Hinrich was a clutch player at Kansas. He has a great feel for the game and possesses the ability to anticipate the play. The 6-foot-3 Jayhawk can also light up the scoreboard with a lethal jump shot. He's an excellent distributor of the ball and doesn't turn it over very much. The 6-foot-2 Ridnour is another exciting player; he's more of a true point guard than Hinrich. Troy Bell (Boston College) and Marcus Banks (UNLV) are second-round candidates.
The Sonics would be thrilled to get Ridnour or Hinrich at 12 because that will allow them to focus on a power forward at 14. Sund could reunite Hinrich with close friend and former KU teammate Nick Collison, but the team really needs more of a rugged player to fill the position. Georgetown's Mike Sweetney and Greek power forward Sofoklis Schortsanitis are possible targets.
