(My Sportsbook) - Monday's game between the Seattle SuperSonics and
New Jersey Nets featured the two best point guards in the league, but it was the forwards who stole the show.
Still angered by being snubbed for the All-Star Game, Kenyon Martin scored a career-high 35 points on 13-of-18 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds to power New Jersey to a 109-108 overtime win over the Sonics.
Desmond Mason and Rashard Lewis did their best to keep Seattle in the game. Mason totaled 30 points, six rebounds and six assists, while Lewis collected 25 points, eight boards and three steals.
Jason Kidd, who had missed the last two games with a groin injury, scored 20 points and dished out 12 assists for the Nets. Counterpart Gary Payton scored just 12 points on 5-of-19 shooting while collecting seven dimes. He also had a chance at the go-ahead basket late in regulation, but missed a layup with just 19 seconds remaining.
Seattle still had an opportunity at the win in the final seconds of the fourth quarter, but Martin blocked Lewis' shot attempt to keep the game knotted.
Martin then completed a three-point play to begin the extra session. After a basket by Mason, Kidd nailed a three-pointer to give the Nets a 106-102 cushion. However, the Sonics responded by scoring the next four points to tie the game with 2:22 to go.
Seattle trailed by one, 109-108, with 4.7 seconds left, but had a chance at the win. A nice inbounds play allowed Mason a good look at a three from the left side, but his shot missed as time expired.
"It felt good when it left my hands," Mason said. "It was the best shot you could possibly get. I had no one on me. It just didn't fall."
Seattle actually trailed by 13 points late in the third quarter before using a 15-3 burst to pull within 85-84 with 8:58 to play in the fourth. A jumper by Kenny Anderson with 3:37 to play gave Seattle a 94-93 lead, its first since the game's opening minutes. However, the Sonics couldn't hold on.
"This type of game has been the story of the first half of our season," Seattle coach Nate McMillan said. "We are having trouble closing out games. We had the last attempt in regulation and we couldn't get an attempt at the basket. In OT we had a good look at the end and we don't knock down the shot."
It was the second tight game between the teams this season. Back on December 1, Brent Barry sank a game-winning three pointer to lift Seattle. Barry returned to action Monday after missing four straight games with a sore knee and scored just three points in 20 minutes.
Seattle lost for the 10th time in its last 15 games and fell four games below .500 (21-25). The Sonics play four of their next five games on the road.
