New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Former New York Rangers goaltender Charlie "Chuck" Rayner passed away after suffering a fatal heart attack on Saturday, the NHL announced Wednesday. Rayner, who was 82, was a three-time team MVP and won the Hart Trophy as the league's most valuable player in 1950. Rayner played 10 seasons in the NHL, and was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973. Rayner led the Rangers to within one goal of the Stanley Cup in 1950. Despite finishing fourth in the league's regular-season standings, the Rangers knocked off the Montreal Canadiens before facing the Detroit Red Wings in a seven-game final. Madison Square Garden was booked with the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus, forcing the Rangers to host just two "home" games at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. The Red Wings, who played at home for five games during the final, prevailed in the seventh game on an overtime goal by Pete Babando that eluded Rayner. Rayner was also the first goaltender in history to be credited with scoring a goal. While playing with a Royal Canadian Armed Forces Team in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1944, Rayner skated all the way up the ice for the historic tally.
