New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Bonzi Wells scored 22 points and Rasheed Wallace contributed 18 points and 12 rebounds, as the Portland Trail Blazers held on to defeat the
New York Knicks, 92-89.
Antonio Daniels had 15 points and Scottie Pippen collected 12 points, seven boards and five assists for Portland, which has won 10 of its last 11 games.
Allan Houston paced New York with 29 points. Latrell Sprewell chipped in 16 points and Charlie Ward added 12 for the Knicks, who had a three-game winning streak halted.
Portland trailed by four points early in the third quarter, before going on an 18-2 burst, culminated by Wells' dunk, to grab a 67-55 lead with 5:02 left in the period.
The Knicks slowly chipped away and pulled within 78-76 on Houston's short jumper in the lane with 8:03 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Trail Blazers then countered with seven consecutive points to restore a nine-point advantage with 5:20 left. New York again rallied and cut the deficit to 90-89 on a three-pointer by Sprewell with 18.7 seconds left.
New York then fouled Wells, who proceeded to make both free throws. The Knicks, down three, had trouble getting off a shot and the ball was knocked out of bounds by Pippen with seven seconds remaining.
New York then inbounded the ball to Houston, who inexplicably stepped inside the three-point arc and attempted an 18-foot jumper that missed off the front rim. Portland rebounded the ball and eventually ran out the clock.
The Trail Blazers used a 10-2 run in the first quarter to take a 16-8 lead. Wallace and Wells each had four points during the spurt.
Portland held a 23-19 advantage after 12 minutes and then received a jumper from Wallace to begin the second quarter. New York responded with an 8-2 run, highlighted by five points from Houston, to tie the game at 27-27 with 9:49 left in the period.
The game remained tight, before New York went on a 9-0 run, keyed by five points from Ward, to grab a 42-34 lead with 4:50 remaining in the stanza.
The Trail Blazers battled back and closed within 49-46 at halftime. Houston had 14 points in the first half, while Wallace led Portland in the opening 24 minutes with 12.
