Broncos claim linebacker Davis off waivers Headlines 06/01/2010

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -The Denver Broncos have claimed linebacker Bruce Davis off waivers from New England.

The third-year pro spent most of last season on the Patriots' practice squad after playing in five games as a rookie in 2008 for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who had made him a third-round draft selection out of UCLA.

Davis ranked second in school history with 29 sacks and was a first-team All Pac-10 selection his senior season.

Brandstater a backstory in Broncos QB race NFL Football 05/27/2010

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -When Tim Tebow moved ahead of Tom Brandstater to take the third-team quarterback repetitions at the Denver Broncos' passing camp Thursday, the least known of the team's four quarterbacks shrugged it off.

``The order doesn't matter to me,'' Brandstater said. ``The reps I get, I need to make them count, and that goes for every guy on the team.''

With all the questions raised about incumbent Kyle Orton's hold on the job after the drafting of Tebow, a former Heisman Trophy winner at

Broncos' Stokley sidelined by shoulder injury NFL Football 05/27/2010

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -Wide receiver Brandon Stokley was held out of Thursday's passing camp practice by the Denver Broncos, the latest workout he's missed because of a shoulder injury.

Coach Josh McDaniels says Stokley has missed several of the team's spring practices since falling on his shoulder during a recent workout.

He did not elaborate on when Stokley suffered the injury, and, as a matter of routine, does not put a timeline on a player's return from injury.

The injury put another hole in the

Denver Broncos sign 7th-round draft pick Kirlew Headlines 05/26/2010

DENVER (AP) -The Denver Broncos have signed linebacker Jammie Kirlew, their seventh-round draft pick.

The team didn't disclose the terms of the deal, which was announced Tuesday.

The 6-foot-3, 264-pound Kirlew played for Indiana, where he was a two-time team MVP and two-time All-Big Ten selection. He tied for third on the school's all-time sacks list (23) and tied for second on its all-time tackles for loss list (52.5).

Kirlew was also a four-time Big Ten All-Academic Team selection at Indiana.Copyri

High winds wreak havoc on Broncos passing camp NFL Football 05/24/2010
) -Those weren't trade winds blowing through Dove Valley on Monday.

On a blustery day when a 45-foot pine tree next to one of the team's practice fields was blown over by wind gusts that reached 70 mph, coach Josh McDaniels emphatically denied the Denver Broncos were trying to deal one of their four quarterbacks.

There's been speculation that the Broncos have considered trading starter Kyle Orton to make room for Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow or maybe even Tom Brandstater.

McDaniels said none of the Broncos

heart disease, according to his daughter, Sherrill Jones. She said her father also was battling skin cancer.

Jones, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991, also spent more than two decades coaching in the NFL, including 18 seasons with the Denver Broncos.

``He was a wonderful father and teacher, he was our hero,'' Sherrill Jones said.

Born in Altoona, Penn., on Nov. 24, 1931, Jones grew up in the Harrisburg area, where he was introduced to the York Barbell Co.'s weights, which he began using to

Former NFL Hall of Fame lineman Jones dies NFL Football 05/22/2010

DENVER (AP) -Hall of Fame lineman and defensive line coach Stan Jones has died. He was 78.

The Denver Broncos said in a statement that Jones died Friday. No cause of death was given.

Jones played on the offensive line for the Chicago Bears in the 1950s and '60s before switching to the defensive line in 1962. He was chosen to seven straight Pro Bowls from 1955 to 1961, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1991.

Broncos sign 7th-round draft pick NFL Football 05/21/2010

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -Cal cornerback Syd'Quan Thompson is the first member of the Denver Broncos' 2010 draft class to sign a contract.

Thompson is a seventh-round draft pick who earned first-team All-Pac 10 honors in each of his final two seasons at Cal.

Thompson started all 52 games possible over his four-year college career but a pulled right hamstring kept him from playing in the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game.

He set a school record with 36 pass breakups and posted seven interceptions and

Kyle Orton chief among Denver Broncos' bevy of QBs NFL Football 05/20/2010

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -Kyle Orton's designs on a long-term contract from the Denver Broncos took a hit with the offseason acquisitions of Brady Quinn and Tim Tebow.

While Orton may not represent the future of the franchise, he certainly is the present.

That was clear at the Broncos' passing camp this week when all four quarterbacks, including second-year pro Tom Brandstater, took the field at Dove Valley together for the first time.

Orton went first on all the drills and had the firmer grasp of the s

McChesney retires from NFL after golf cart injury NFL Football 05/19/2010

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) -Veteran journeyman guard Matt McChesney has retired from the NFL after suffering an ankle injury in a golf cart accident last month.

The former University of Colorado offensive lineman had a shot at making the Denver Broncos' roster as a backup guard and center.

He was getting out of his cart to hit his ball recently when a trailing cart clipped him, resulting in an injury to the same ankle he had surgically repaired after a preseason injury in Denver last year.
